When I am doing a patient assessment, I kind of feel like a detective looking at all the little details to be able to form a bigger picture. It feels good to be able to come up with little solutions to patient complaints to be able to work towards them feeling better. I also feel a sense of importance because I am the first one gauging the situation to be able to provide an adequate handoff report which gives hospital staff a strong foundation to work with.

We doing a patient assessment I feel a sense of urgency as well as feel important. Assessing a patient you want to make sure you can address the trauma and or medical need. You literally have someone’s life in your hands because if you don’t treat properly that can lead to more harm to your patient. In the beginning I also felt fear for that reason as well and that is worried I’d miss something and harm would come to my patient.

When I start assessing a patient I'm looking for the urgent problem. It's like putting together a unique puzzle. As of lately all my patients have had a ton of underlying conditions. Trying to be able to decipher what could be causing what is so interesting to me. The end goal is to watch my patient feel better and help relieve some issues physically and/or mentally.

During patient assessment I try to concentrate on the chief complaint while also trying to see if there is more going on. Sometimes I'll see something that the patient doesn't even know about. It is such a rewarding feeling when you get on a scene and everyone looks to you for expertise. Often times while I'm running to a call, I'm already running possibility's through my mind. It's a great adrenaline rush.

When I am doing a patient assessment and it is going good I feel great. If I am doing one and the patients condition is deteriorating then I feel bad and a little panicked. We had a call like this the other day and a few different obstacles occurred and it was making family nervous we just kept reassuring the patient and the family. Reassessing every 5-10 mins and all worked together as a rescue/ems team. At the end the patient was ok and family thanked us for our hard work which makes you feel accomplished

Since I have never performed a patient assessment on any job professionally, I can't say much about how I feel during one beyond the practices and tests I completed during the EMR class. During those instances, I pressed myself to 'administer' all necessary aid and was then significantly concerned with gathering all possible information before making any particular judgments. In all of these practices, we had a short task/interval to complete the task, so I imagine actual scenarios will throw countless more items into the mix and bog you down with reassessments. Despite my worries about the complexities of these scenarios, I am reasonably calm in emergencies and hope to do well in completing assessments.

When doing assessments, I can't help but feel nervous. The last thing I'd want to do is accidentally miss something and have it become an issue later. I'm getting better and the more I practice, the better I fell about doing them.
