Miss Emily & Her Mind

Miss Emily fights against her mind a lot throughout the short story. She kept her door closed for a long time just isolating herself from humanity. The text shows this in paragraph 49, "From that time on her front door remained closed, save for a period of six or seven years, when she was about 40." (Faulkner 49). Miss Emily was a very conservative person, she liked to keep to herself and didn't let anyone really get to know her. She trapped herself in her house which also trapped her inside her own mind and she couldn't escape.

Towns Women Judging Emily

The townspeople in the story are the ones who are telling the story. The townspeople judged, talked, and spread rumors about Emily. The constant rumor spreading led Emily to isolate herself from the other townsfolk. The woman believed she was never going to get married and that she was very odd. They talked and gossiped, saying," She will kill herself." All because she is not married (Faulkner 43). They led her to the mental state she was in because of what they said

Pharmacist

The pharmacist had an important role in how Emily acted and her actions. Emily came to the pharmacist to get the poison that killed Homer Barron. The pharmacist was intimidated by her as well. She had bought the poison, "the druggist didn't come back"(Faulkner 42). The pharmacist was scared of Emily and felt that she had made him uneasy. However, he still played an important role for Emily. The pharmacist giving her the arsenic was the reason for the whole plot of the short story, with the death of Homer Barron.

The towns People With The Lye

The people in town had a great deal to do with Emily's feelings and actions. The townspeople talked behind her back and made her feel isolated from everyone. They believed that her house was emitting a strange smell, so during the dark for the night they went to her house to sprinkle lye to make the house smell better. But as they were leaving the window, " was lighted and Miss Emily sat in it, the light behind her"(Faulkner 24). Emily knew that the townspeople thought she was odd. The people who believed she was strange made her feel like she had to isolate herself from everyone

Emily's Dads Strictness

Emily's dad was hard on her, as all dads are on their daughters. But Mr. Grierson was a lot harsher on her about boys than most other parents are. For years," when she got to be thirty and was still single," it was all because of her dad(Faulkner 25). There were many "young men her father had driven away"(Faulkner 28), causing her to be very alone and isolated. Once her dad died, she could finally talk to and date men in her town. This leads to the story's plot, with her dad playing a major part in the progression of Emily's character throughout the story, leading up to the short story's plot.

In the story "A Rose for Emily" she has a very strange relationship with her father. The father in this story is very demanding with keeping Emily away from all men. This leads to Emily having a hard time fitting in with most women or being able to make a healthy bond with other men. Miss Emily only came to know her father until he passed on. However, even though her father has passed on she still holds onto the idea of her father being there for her. When towns people had came to her and tried talking to miss.emily, she was very set on the idea that he had not passed away. In paragraph 27 she goes on to tell the town people that her "father was not dead" . This can show and lead to the example that the only man she came to known and have a connection with was her father. This would later lead on to bigger issues down the road.

Emily & Her two cousins

Miss. Emily's cousins, were the only two females who were able to create some type of bond. However, they were quick to judge miss. Emily for not marrying any man. When the story gets to the point of Emily's father dying the towns people describe the two female cousins as being " even more Grierson that miss Emily had ever been", they said the towns people to become glad when the seen that the two cousins were there to visit Miss.Emily. This could show that Emily must have felt emotions of feeling isolated from her the people around her and even with close family members.

Emily & death

At the end of the story when Miss. Emily passes the towns people are finally able to go into the upstairs that no one had been able to see or walk upon for a very long time. Is then when the towns people are able to see the true depth and agony that Miss. Emily was going through. When the towns people are able to see the body they "just stood there looking down at the profound and flesh less grin" (paragraph 59). This very moment in the story can show the isolation and loneliness that Miss.Emily had felt. She was so isolated and lonely that she had to keep a tight hold onto the men who were in her life even after death.

Miss Emily & Homer Barron

Miss Emily and Homer Barron were the talk of the town because she is a very rich classy women who had never been with a man. Homer Barron was a blue collar northerner. Miss Emily ignored everyone's remarks on her and Homer even though they would never work. The town was so dumbfounded when they saw Miss Emily buy things for him: "We learned that Miss Emily had been to the jewelers and ordered a man's toilet set in silver, with the letters H.B. on each piece" (Faulkner 45). The town never thought that they would do anything serious but Miss Emily had never been with a man before and she had chosen Homer Barron to be the first.

Miss Emily & the Town

Miss Emily did not have the greatest relationship with the towns people. The town has never been real friendly to Miss Emily. They talk about her behind her back and judge her even when she never did anything to her. They never tried to get to know her all they did was call her weird and talk about how her father ruined her life by not letting her date. The town never paid any actual attention to Miss Emily they only cared about if she was dating or if she was isolating herself,: " We did not even know she was sick; we had long since given up trying to get any information from the Negro"(Faulkner 52). The town never cared about Miss Emily so after her father died she was all alone. She only had her doorman.
