(February 4th 1945)
The Yalta Conference was a meeting between president Roosevelt prime minister Winston Churchill and the premier of the soviet union Joseph Stalin. For 8 days the three men discussed what the fate of Germany would be once world war II had officially
ended. Stalin felt that Hitler should be punished for the damage that he had created in the soviet union during the war, stalin wanted to divide Germany into different areas that would be controlled by the allied military forces, stalin wanted to assure that Germany would never threaten the Soviets again. Churchill thought that Stalin's demands were outrageous but roosevelt simply agreed with him for two vital reasons. first because he needed the soviet union to keep their promise and join the war against japan if needed. also roosevelt wanted Stalin's support for his new peace keeping organization the United Nations. Roosevelt was able to get churchill to agree to Stalin's demands and they separated Germany into 4 zones a zone for America, Soviet Union, Britain and France. Stalin then promises free elections in Poland and other Soviet occupied eastern european countries Lastly Stalin agreed to join the war against Japan and the United Nations. the Yalta conference was basically a bunch of compromises to keep Joseph Stalin satisfied
US- 50%
USSR- 50%
- Both the US and the USSR were both equally responsible for what happened during the Yalta conference it wasn't something that really shifted anything or had a large impact in adding tension for the war the conference was more of discussing post war things what would happen to hitler and giving Joseph stalin everything he wanted so that the US wouldn't have o worry about hi not following through with his promises
(By: Charley Chew)

President Truman accepted the responsibility then asked congress for $400 Million to give Greece and Turkey both economic and military aid. In his truman doctrine he declared that it was the duty of the US to help support free peoples who were fighting the attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by any outside pressure. Congress agreed with truman and granted him the funds, they also thought the doctrine would help the spread of soviet influence from 1947-1950 the united states sent over $400 Million dollars in aid to Turkey and Greece This also helped to reduce the danger of communist takeover in those nations.
US - 100%
USSR - 0%
the truman doctrine was designed to help this didn't really add any fuel to the fire that sparked the war it was only because other counties knew that the united states was reliable to help if needed.
(By: Charley Chew)

(June 3rd 1948)
The Marshall Plan was somewhat similar to the Truman Doctrine. Greece and other parts of western Europe were suffering post war, due to the loss of factories and other things. people were living in refugee camps until the government was able to find somewhere for them to go . and the winter of 1946-1947 was extremely bad the cold weather ruined crops and cut off water transportation causing a fuel shortage. the secretary of state suggested that the US fund aid for all european nations that needed it. marshall claimed that the plan was not against any country or doctrine but against hunger, poverty, and chaos.
US - 100%
USSR - 0%
The USSR didn't have anything to do with the Marshall plan it was simply the US trying to lend a helping hand but also allow them to make new alliances in case there was ever a war they would have new friends that they have done favors for just incase they ever needed one in return.
(By: Charley Chew)

They were hoping that the invasion would trigger a mass uprising and overthrow Castro. President Kennedy didn't find out about the plan until 9 days after he was elected but he still approved the mission even though he was doubtful. on the day of the planned attack 1300-1500 cuban exiles supported by the Us landed on islands southern coast at the bahia de chins the bay of pigs. the mission went nothing as they had planned, invading exiles were killed and captured and the US was extremely embarrassed. Publicly president Kennedy took full responsibility for the failed attempt of invasion but privately he questioned how the pentagon and CIA could be so wrong.Kennedy had to pay a ransom of $53 Million to Castro for the return of the commandos plus food and medical aid. Castro welcomed help and aid from the soviets
US - 100%
USSR - 0%
The epic fail that was the mission at the bay of pigs was completely the fault of the US. president kennedy should have been more sure before approving and reviewed the mission more. the soviets giving aid to Cuba was simply to spite the US
(By: Charley Chew)

US ships then prepared to quarantine Cuba and prevent ships from coming within 500 miles also 100,00 soldiers were waiting in florida. the first break in the crisis is when soviet ships stopped to avoid a confrontation at sea. the soviet premier the agreed to remove the missiles if the US pledged to never invade Cuba
the US secretly removed their missiles from Turkey
US -25%
USSR - 75%
- The soviets were more to blame for the Cuban missile crisis because they were the ones that were bringing missiles and other nuclear weapons to Cuba to test out.

(August 6th 1945)
When Franklin D. Roosevelt was in office, he created the Advisory Committee on Uranium to study a new discovery to help with the creation of the deadly weapon. The code name for this project was The Manhattan Project because most of it's research was developed at Columbia University in Manhattan. Until the day he was sworn in, President Truman had no idea of this project but once he did find out, he decided to use the powerful new weapon because he believed it was the only way to avoid an invasion of Japan. On August 6, 1945 a B-29 released the atomic bomb "little boy" over Hiroshima. The city ceased to exist. However, Japan still refused to surrender so the U.S proceeded to drop another bomb "fat-man" over Nagasaki, leaving half the city. This resulted in the death of over 200,000 people. Though the bomb did end World War II, it is believed that it sparked the beginning of the cold war. By: Joan Wolfgramm

(1957-1975)
The "space race" was a competition between the US and USSR to develop aerospace capabilities which include artificial satellites, unmanned space probes, and human spaceflight. In relation to this, NASA was established on October 1, 1958 to develop civilian aerospace research. Their goal was to launch a manned vehicle into the Earth's orbit as soon as they possibly could. The USSR was able to enter a man into earth's orbit first in April 1961. The US was able to enter their man into space in February 1962. Because the USSR achieved a lot more than the US, the US was impacted most by this race because it altered their strategic defense doctrines and led to new educational initiatives. By: Joan Wolfgramm

On October 4, 1957 the Soviets launched Sputnik, the world's first artificial satellite and man-made object to orbit the earth. Sputnik traveled around earth at 18,000 mph, circulating around the globe every 96 minutes. This launch was a triumph of Soviet technology. However, the United States were shocked by this news. It sparked fear and anxiety in the US due to the fact that the USSR was ahead of the US in technological achievements. This resulted in causing the US to pour their money into their own space program. The U.S failed when their rocket went toppling to the ground. They bounced back on January 1st, 1958 when they launched their first satellite. By: Joan Wolfgramm

(August 13, 1961)
The construction of the Berlin Wall began on August 13, 1961. The wall was intended to keep Western fascists from entering East Germany and undermining the socialist state. It was also built to stop the flow of refugees from East to West Berlin because as more people fled to avoid living under a communist rule, it made the East economy unstable. Because the Western part was given to the US, Great Britain, and France, their capitalist city being right next to the communist ruled Eastern part is what caused the Russians to plot to drive the US, Britain, and France out of the city. The construction of the wall did end the Berlin Crisis but it also aggravated Cold War tensions. The wall became an ugly symbol of communist oppression. By: Joan Wolfgramm
