I used to think that teachers dictate everything but now I think it is alright to get students to be involved in their learning, to create the sense of belonging in students. I still see the need for teachers to be flexible as we work with 30 to 40 different individual. Not easy but doable.

I used to think that there shouldn't be too much decoration in the classroom in fear of providing unnecessary distractions for the students.

Now I know that these charts on the boards can also serve as a self-directed revision tool for the students.

I used to think that setting up an aesthetically pleasing environment requires a lot of work from the teacher. Now I think that it is important to be intentional and have realistic expectations of myself as a teacher, pace myself by involving the students in the process. I still wonder when the term starts, am I able to do it as the work intensity increases.Thank you for the insightful sharing!

I used to think too many visuals can be overwhelming to students with SEN

Now i think having suitable visuals with intentional messages/content in class can be very useful

I used to think that teachers especially FTs need to create the class lerning environment, eg. notice board design for the class at the beginning of the new year. Now I know that we can take time to build on these as it should be accumulative work. And we should also give students the ownership of creating their learning environment.

I used to think that Learning Content are information from experts (e.g. posters or books)

Now I know that Learning Content are student- created resources 😊 these student-created resources not only promote collaborative learning, but also foster a sense of belonging and pride.

Used to think creating a welcoming environment is just putting up students’ photographs and commercialised poster. We need to be thinking of the intentions behind it. We need to think of the 4 factors.

I used to think that putting up posters and students' work in class is to make the classroom feel warm and "print-rich".

Now, I think that by putting up students' work and others like the Value wall and gratitutde charts, they must be intentional and for a good purpose. Thank you for the sharing :)

I used to think that teachers should decide how the learning spaces in the classroom would be set up, but now I know it is important to include students' voice to foster a sense of belonging. I still wonder how a upper primary classroom embodying the Reggio Emilia approach would look like.
