Kubrick used narration to enhance his films. Krasselt states that Kubrick used narration to its fullest extent. Generally in film school, people are taught not to utilize narration, since it is a lazy way to tell a story, and this is somewhat true. In Kubrick’s earlier work, people can see that, but in A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon, and in a way Full Metal Jacket, narration is beautifully used. Narration in the mentioned movies added depth and complexion. It enhanced the audience's connections with the character. Kubrick liked to use the untrustworthy narrator which is a very effective technique. It can be tricky to do correctly and requires masterful writing, and Kubrick succeeded at doing it (TasteofCinema).

Stanley Kubrick had worked in other areas of the arts to become as great as he is today. Mark Krasselt states that shortly out of high school, Stanley Kubrick became a photographer. Many of his images portray an amazing story. Also, Many people adore his art (TasteofCinema). Due to Kubrick being such a great photographer, he was very good with a camera. Krasselt mentions, “Perhaps no visual signature is more prominent in Kubrick’s oeuvre than the one-point perspective – perfect symmetrical framing – and its corollary, the reverse tracking shot… In Kubrick’s hands, the use was quite jarring since no director alive at the time framed this way. As a result, it became a type of visual, Brechtian distancing device to awaken and assault the viewer’s senses that became a deliberately self-referential directorial tick. It meant something was about to happen. It meant pay attention and drew significant attention because it often screamed look at me” (TasteofCinema).

Although Kubrick is considered one of the greatest directors of all time, he is also very controversial. Kubrick was known for severely mistreating the actors on a film. Colangelo states that Kubrick severely mistreated actress Shelley Duvall. The way Kubrick treated Duvall almost made her quit acting entirely. The peak of his cruelty towards actress Shelley Duvall was during one of The Shining’s most notorious scenes: the scene where Jack Nicholson’s character confronts Shelley Duvall’s character on the stairs. In this scene, Duvall is holding a baseball bat. Kubrick did this scene in one-hundred and twenty-seven takes. Duvall’s hands were swollen from holding the bat, her eyes were puffy, her voice was damaged from crying, all moments of fear are real when Duvall is on screen (SlashFilm).

Stanley Kubrick has many traits that led him to becoming one of the most famous, but also infamous, directors of all time. He used many techniques such as music, narration, and concepts derived from works of literature to separate himself from the average director. He also started as a photographer, which helped him as a filmmaker, but he also was involved in shady conspiracies and mistreated his actors on set. Stanley Kubrick was one of the most notable directors of all time, and will hopefully be remembered for years to come.
