Making learning connect to students' lives is always a way to get them introduced and interested in a lesson; however, too often teachers are limited by what context they think students need or references they find interesting. Instead, by getting to know their students' interests, teachers can bring in relevant contextual information that will ignite their students' desire to learn more about the topic at hand (and as a bonus, will know their teacher cares enough about them as individuals to make the learning relevant to them).

I will work to incorporate more diversity in decor.

I will poll the room to find out what students have seen, heard or know about the topic of discussion.

Allow students the opportunity to express and bring their cultural experiences in the room.

It's important to keep students informed and connected to global issues ( current event ) and connect how they impact humanity. It's not my job to tell students how to think or feel about global issues.

Educators should stay relevant and know what different student genre's care about. What in- the-know topics, music, movies, etc. are of interest to them.

Create stations with chart paper and place different topics and allow students to place their prior knowledge.

Create culture stations where students can create a culture board to place around the room and leave for the year and allow them to explore through out the year t others while others are learning different things about different cultures.

Create a gallery walk where students respond to pictures or topics. I'll include things that interest them

Develop a relationship with students and their families so when I invite them into the room they are more likely to share. I'm going to learn about the important cultural traditions and values of the students and their families.

All students should "see" themselves in the classroom. I'm going to ensure that the images and materials I use don't rely on stereotypes.

It's the teacher's responsibility to form an authentic relationship with students and families- which means sharing about staff and staff cultures too
