And ultimately create a 5 year plan containing a rough idea of what i'm going to do and how i'm going to do it in what order.

Then think about how it will address it.

It will address the problem of not having a brand as an artist by building one. Not only that but also planning out how i am going to take my career as an artist from where i am now to where i want to be in 5 years.

Then think about why you are the best person/people to do this and what you have achieved so far.

I am the best person to do this because nobody is going to build my career for me.
Week 4 Goals

I think before I did the business rationale I thought I needed to really set some goals for each year of my career plan.

Year one- I think this is the most important year really. So my goals for this year are pretty straightforward.

1. To build a social media presence for my music. That would take the form of an instagram page, a facebook page, a tik tok page, and i think I want to make youtube content to engage with people on that level too.

2. So I need to learn how to edit good quality content for my socials.

3. Release music. I need to get my music out there so I can build a brand. Have it on all platforms so that means learning how to release music properly. I think singles and hopefully an ep would be good.

4. Combine those two elements to gain a small fan base.

5. Start playing local gigs by myself to build confidence as a performer.

Year 2-

1. Move to Brighton Im hoping to be in Brighton doing the MA course by this time. So think now is a good time to form a band with people i meet out there to play my music live in a band setting.

2. I think this year is a good time to focus on live performance now I have built an online presence. But i think by the end of the year I would like to possibly have another Ep out.

3. Look into wether i would want to sign to a label and also if i would want a manager or not.

4. Look into other avenues of getting Income wether that be merchandise or even brand deals??

Year 3 -

1. Hopefully at this point I will have a fan base and will have built a name for myself as an artist. So I think it would be time to release an album. And do promotional stuff for that album.

2. Hopefully at this point I will be able to do interviews or be able to perform with my band on television shows or radio shows. anything that will expose me as an artist to a wider audience.

3. Tour. i need to look into how i am going to tour and if i need a tour manager.

4. Collaboration with other artists

year 4 -

1. Afew more singles and writing for another album

2. Hopefully get on the festival circuit.

3. Merchandise

year 5 -

1. Second album out

2. Im hoping at this point i will be a big artist with a big following and will be able put on a tour into Europe or even America. Ideally id like to be touring the world at this point.

So I think initially collaboration would just consist of working with other creators and musicians.

Then after awhile once had built up abit of a brand and a career. I would be looking into possibly getting a manager.

So a manager wouldn’t be necessarily be needed in the first year but when things start to pick up on the second year i think a manager would be good to help organise my career.

So the manager would be responsible for:

-Marketing and image
-Touring
-Artist Development
-Promotion
-Budgeting and Money Management
-Multimedia opportunities

I think a manager would be helpful in taking my career to the next stage in the second year.

Reference-

Masterclass Staff (2021) What Is an Artist Manager? Although I would like to stay independent and don’t think I need to sign to a label I think it would be beneficial to look into it.

So after reading afew articles on the subject I don't think i would need to sign to a label and i don't think i would need the money that they could provide me. Hopefully as i grow i can fund what i want to do myself. But if a record label come along that could offer me exposure and connections that i couldn’t achieve otherwise and they were offering me a good deal then I would definitely consider it.

Reference-

Rory PQ (2019) BEING AN INDEPENDENT ARTIST VS.
Week 6 Publishing Research (Collecting Royalties)

#1 Public performance royalties

Public performance royalties will be paid to either the songwriter, publisher or both whenever songs are performed in public. This doesn’t just apply to pub gigs or stadium tours, it literally means in public. This could include radio stations, in shops, restaurants, cafes, shopping centres, anywhere!

#2 Mechanical royalties

Mechanical royalties are paid to songwriters or publishers. Songs can be licensed for audio products, including CDs, digital recordings, vinyl or even cassettes. These products generate royalties when they are sold. However, these royalties are typically based on sales of goods rather than production. For example, if the CD is never sold, you wouldn’t earn any royalties.

#3 Synchronisation royalties

If the audio is accompanied by another form of media then you receive synchronisation royalties. You will earn these royalties whenever your track is used in audiovisual media such as TV, film or video games. The producer of this media will require a license in order to use your song.

#4 Digital royalties

Synchronisation royalties now also exist digitally and you will be able to claim royalties if your music is being used on a video. YouTube is now a huge and extremely popular platform and YouTubers often use music in the background of their videos. You can earn a lot of money if their video uses your music and receives a lot of views.

#5 Print royalties

Songwriters and composers can make money by printing and selling their music or lyrics. This is typically sheet music but can even apply to merchandise where certain song lyrics are used.

So I have created a basic t-shirt on vistaprint and I would get 60 t-shirts for £363.49 that’s roughly £6 per t-shirt. If I sold them for £20 a t-shirt that’s £14 pound profit. So if I ordered 60 and sold them at £20 a shirt I would make £1,200 - £363.49 = £836.51 profit. And that’s just for the first run of merch. Hopefully I can scale up to eventually sell lots more.

Vistaprint (2021) Vistaprint, Vistaprint, Available at: https://www.vistaprint.co.uk/?PCXTVATINCLUSIVE=&utm_id=2B10404544757289694316&coupon=&partner=google&ps_vtp=5283944%7C1707815676%7C%7Ckwd-104664860%7Cc%7C1007206%7C%7Cg&ps_vtp2=g%7Cvistaprint%7Ce%7C352628689176%7C%7C%7C%7C%7C&gclid=Cj0KCQiA2NaNBhDvARIsAEw55hhBVvhW1VMnnLVrR9h-CFy_iDAZeJasQ9nNVw7svKnTWsEJCk8_9-EaAmyuEALw_wcB, (Accessed, 20th november 2021)

There are so many thing to consider when putting a tour on -

Production Expenses

So all the i would need like PA systems lights tour bus ect...

Accomodations

This is pretty self explanatory its when

Transportation Expenses

Insurance

Crew Salaries

Commissions and Third Party Payments

Marketing and Promotion

So for a month long tour it could cost 15,000 - 50,000 pounds!!

so if i toured or a month and did 24 shows that had roughly 1,500 capacity and each ticket was £40 then I could make £1,440,000 per show. But That wouldn’t include the venues cut the promoters cut and the tour manager.

say the manager takes 20%
the venue takes 50%

then thats £576,000 left

then 50% tax = 288,000

minus the say 50 grand costs = 238,000

divided up by say a band of 5 is = 47,000 each!!
<var>

It’s just so elastic. And you don’t have a lot of people doing it that way, because in a lot of the contracts of today with the labels, there’s an expectation to turn in a set amount of albums. That’s really an arbitrary limitation. That’s not state-of-the-art. I hear rappers talk about their business savvy and their independence in songs. And I think the more of that, the better.
