The Silencing Work Barrier Between Men and Women

In the television series, Mad Men, there is a barrier between men and women in the workplace. Women have no say in the big scheme of things, even when they are the ones in charge. In the pilot episode of the series, Don Draper enters a room to meet with a client, and sees a male and a female. He then proceeds to shake the hand of the male representative, yet it turns out that it is a woman by the name of Rachel Menken who is in control. Don ends up storming out of the room when Rachel tries to change the advertising campaign, saying, “I’m not going to let a woman talk to me like this.” This clearly demonstrates how there is a real barrier between men and woman in the workplace. Don’s mind is so occupied with the fact that women are below the men in terms of hierarchy in the workplace, that he assumes the representative is a male and shakes his hand. Even when Rachel is pitching her ideas of changing the advertising campaign, Don gets defensive and storms out of the room, stating how he isn’t going to let a woman command him. This further displays how even when there is a woman in charge, men don’t want to accept it. Don doesn’t want to hear Rachel’s ideas only because of the fact that she is a woman.

The Unfair Usage of Women and Manipulability of Their Sexuality

Men frequently manipulate women’s sexuality and use them to their own benefit in the AMC series, Madmen. When the agency attempts to create a campaign for an electric weight loss machine, the men ask their wives and female employees to try the machine. The machine does not cause any actual weight loss yet only stimulates women sexually. The men laugh and make jokes about the machine and how it could replace their role in bed. This shows how the men play with the women just because of their sex. They feel that they can control them and use their bodies to test new products. The men know that the Electrosizer causes sexual stimulation yet still want to mess around with the women for their own pleasure. When Peggy tells the men at the agency what the machine does, the men laugh and make jokes as if Peggy were not present. They joke about each other’s wives and sex life right in front of Peggy, not caring if she is listening. The men in the office are the leaders, while the women linger about, getting made fun of and sexualized. The females who work in the office, are essentially the men's pets since the men can do whatever they want to them with no one to oblige. The women are used as the men’s examples and in this case, be made fun of. The men in the workplace have no concern for the women they work with and tend to be obsessed by their own illusions as they take advantage of them.

Male Dominance Over Women in their Relationships

In the 1960’s era depicted by Mad Men, men have dominance over women in a relationship. In the show, Don spends his days at work and cheats on his wife, Betty, without guilt and feels that he can do so because of male privilege. Betty on the other hand, must stay home and gets bored Her African-American housekeeper does most of the work so Betty ends up having little to do. When Don comes home, everything is tidy and ready to go for him. Being a male, Don can do anything he desires without his wife interfering. Since he is the man in the relationship, he dominates over his wife Betty is all ways. Don goes to work and makes the money for the family while Betty must stay home and look after the house. He cheats on his wife and has no remorse when he does so. Don knows he cannot get caught cheating because Betty never leaves the house when he is with his mistress, so this enables him to cheat carefree. Since Don dominates over Betty in their relationship, she would not dare question his loyalty. She fears that she may lose him and lose her “angel at home” status. Since men in this era are responsible for doing all the tough work, society automatically sees them as superior to women in their relationships.
