This article discusses the rise of obesity as a major public health concern in the United States and its links to a range of cancers. Obesity has become the leading cause of preventable deaths in the country. The International Agency for Research on Cancer and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have identified 13 types of cancer that are linked to overweight and obesity, including cancers of the esophagus, liver, gallbladder, colon, and breast. I appreciate that this source goes into detail about how legislation and healthcare practitioners fail to assist in aiding the amount individuals struggling with weight loss. Regardless of the source's strong language, the article does well to highlight the seriousness of the issue and the need for action to prevent obesity and its associated cancers.

The article discusses a study from the Yale University's Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity, which shows that unhealthy food and drink endorsements by professional athletes and celebrities contribute to childhood and teen obesity. The article highlights the role of advertising in promoting unhealthy eating habits among young people. The article does well to acknowledge the issue of advertising's impact on young people's health but is biased towards a negative view of food advertising and does not acknowledge personal responsibility in making healthy choices.

This source speaks about the findings of the World Obesity Federation’s 2023 atlas, which predicts that over 4 billion people, or 51% of the world’s population, will be obese by 2035. The report shows that rates of obesity are rising particularly quickly among children and in lower-income countries. The source does a good job emphasizing the seriousness of the issue and the need for action to prevent obesity from becoming an even greater public health concern in the future.

If we remain indifferent...

If people remain indifferent to the obesity epidemic, the consequences could be dire. Obesity-related health problems, such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes, could become even more widespread, leading to increased healthcare costs and reduced quality of life for millions of people. The impact of the food industry could continue also worsen, contributing to the decline of healthy teenagers. Most of my sources shared a common solution which is to continue to stress the importance of a healthy diet and exercise. If we don't take action to address the obesity epidemic, the consequences could be devastating for individuals, society, and the country as a whole.

What I already know about obesity

Obesity is a growing public health concern. I already know that obsesity it is defined as having a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, and that it can lead to a range of health problems, including heart disease which is the number one killer in the US. Obesity is caused by a combination of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors, such as poor diet, lack of exercise, and stress. Obesity rates are rising in certain groups like low-income and minority populations. This is most likely due to socioeconomic reasons. In order to combat obesity, people need to be educated on healthy choices before suffering the consequences of it.
