CARDIFF CASTLE

CARDIFF BOAT TOURS
On leaving the Castle, a brief stroll through Bute Park, formerly the pleasure gardens of Cardiff Castle, brings you to the water taxi stop.

NORWEGIAN CHURCH
An iconic building at the waters’ edge, former place of worship for Norwegian sailors and the church where Roald Dahl was christened, the Norwegian Church today is a superb place to take a break, enjoy a coffee, a bite to eat, or afternoon tea with panoramic views of the bay.

PRINCIPALITY STADIUM
Principality Stadium (previously known as the Millennium Stadium) and featuring a fully retractable roof is the home of the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU).  Described by the WRU as “the best rugby venue in the world”, it can be visited on a behind-the-scenes tour with an experienced tour guides that leaves you with a keen sense of the huge scale and national standing of this most impressive site.
Tours explore all levels of the stadium, from the Ray Gravell Press Room, deep in the bowels of the terraces, to the VIP Hospitality Suites overlooking the verdant turf below.  You can discover the 2017 UEFA Champions League football dressing rooms and have plenty of great photo opportunities along the way, such as standing by your favourite team member’s shirt or raising a trophy in a victorious pose in the President’s Box, an area normally reserved for Royalty. 

CARDIFF BAY

The boardwalk at Mermaid Quay plays host to a whole menu of funky bars, tasty restaurants and amusements. At weekends in summer you could be forgiven for thinking you were on the Med when the sun’s out and terraces are full. It’s the perfect spot for a lazy lunch or coffee by the waterside or a more boisterous beer or two in the evening as the sun goes down and the lights come on. The traditional carousel ride is the perfect way to keep the kids happy too.

When the bay was flooded, this new wetlands was created on the site of a former salt marsh. It features reedy marshland and floating timber structures offering sheltered breeding areas for birds. Stroll along the gravel walkway which starts at the car park next to the St. David's Hotel, through to the west end of the reserve. Here you’ll find a long boardwalk with a viewing area, which is a great spot for bird watching. Best of all, it’s free.

The pretty seaside town of Penarth became a suburb of Cardiff many years ago, but it retains an atmosphere of its own with its steep streets, pretty shops and ornate Victorian pier. A 20 minute stroll round the bay across the barrage brings you to the marina which is relatively new. A further 15 minutes up the hill or a short taxi ride and you reach the main beach front and that famous old pier with its recently restored Pavilion.

ST FAGANS NATIONAL MUSEUM
It is one of world’s leading open–air museums and Wales’s most-visited heritage attraction. It stands in the grounds of the magnificent St Fagans Castle, a late 16th-century manor house donated to the people of Wales by the Earl of Plymouth. During the last fifty years, over fifty original buildings from different locations in Wales and from different historical periods have been re-built in the 100-acre parkland. Each building is frozen in time and opens a door into Welsh history offering a fascinating glimpse into the past.

DYFFRYN GARDENS
Dyffryn is a peaceful oasis on the outskirts of Cardiff, boasting 55 acres of exceptional Edwardian garden design around its unique Victorian mansion house.
Considered by Cadw to be the best Edwardian gardens in Wales, the National Trust’s Dyffryn Gardens comprises of intimate garden rooms, formal lawns and a glasshouse showcasing an impressive cacti and orchid collection.
Standing at the heart of the estate is the magnificent
Dyffryn House, where everyone can play the pianos, enjoy a game of billiards or sit down and admire the breath-taking views.
Dyffryn’s arboretum on the east side of the garden is a wild and exotic area, holding one of the most significant collections of trees in the National Trust.
