The NYSED does state it to be a "reasonable extension". The proposed amount is time and a half however, it is a decision made by the principal usually in conjunction with the student's teachers. Most of state exams have been translated into 8 different languages. They include: Arabic, Bengali, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Haitian Creole, Korean, Russian, and Spanish. While use of the home/primary language is not allowed on ELA exams, EB students can write their responses to open ended questions in home/primary language. To score these tests, school are responsible in doing so or finding persons who can translate students' responses. However, on the appropriate state examinations EB students may use both an English and an alternative language edition of the exam. However, they must record all of their responses in only one of the exam editions. The use of an alternative language edition of the same must also be recorded  on the student's answer sheet.
