My personal experience as a child and adolescent greatly affected my development as I continued to figure out who I am. Even today with my own children I often think about how certain ways of communicating or discipline affected me as a child and if it hindered me or benefitted me, then I apply what I think to my own behaviors with my children. I was often yelled at, spanked, or approached with a negative reinforcement mindset. That only worked with me out of fear. I now choose to use positive reinforcement with my children so that they better learn to navigate their feelings without worry or fear of the consequences, but because they are meant to explore and make mistakes.
