Who Was Mordechai Anielewicz?

Mordechai Anielewicz was born in 1919 in Wyszków, Poland. As a youth, he joined the Zionist organization Hashomer Hatzair, promoting Jewish unity and resistance. During the Nazi occupation, he became the leader of the Jewish Fighting Organization (ŻOB) in the Warsaw Ghetto. He inspired and mobilized hundreds of young Jews to rise against the Nazis in one of the most significant acts of resistance during the Holocaust.

Despite being vastly outnumbered and outgunned, they held off Nazi troops for nearly a month. The uprising ended on May 16, 1943, when the Nazis destroyed the ghetto, but the fighters had made history.

Anielewicz’s courage and tactical skills unified the ghetto’s fragmented resistance groups. He refused to flee the ghetto and died with his comrades in a bunker at 18 Mila Street, now a memorial site. His leadership became a symbol of bravery and resistance for future generations. After the war, Israeli youth movements and military units honored his memory, and a kibbutz in Israel, Yad Mordechai, bears his name.
