I have one classroom with a couple of boys who have proven themselves real leaders. They started clapping when anyone accomplishes something particularly difficult or if I praise someone in the class. This is the class that is most apt to take risks, try new things and where everyone has amazing grades and all homework turned in. I think that it is really cool to hear that strategies we learn are useful and helpful throughout the year. I also took away a lot of useful tools. While not every PD gives me new ideas that I want to implement, there is always something that I can apply in my courses to help students sometime throughout the year. I like how I have further developed my course materials based on the rubric examples and assignment samples I have seen from colleagues here.

I would tell a new teacher that it is okay to mess up. You won't be perfect your first year and you probably will make mistakes throughout your career. Sometimes lesson plans don't go the way we wanted. Sometimes students forget the concepts as soon as they leave class. And sometimes, as a DLI/WL teacher, you will make mistakes with the language. And that is okay. What matters is that you are transparent and honest with your students that you messed up. If feelings get hurt, it is okay to admit you messed up and change your attitude. I have found that students are a lot more patient and forgiving than we sometimes give them credit for.
