Complete a reflection of your students’ performance. Where do you think your students are? How do you think they have advanced from the previous year? What is the climate of your classroom like and how has it impacted their performance? What has worked well?

My current 1A are definitely Novice Low and write with memorized phrases from the current unit, but the 1B students are more fluid in looping in vocabulary from previous units. My Spanish 2 is recently making progress with communicating in the past tense, preterite and imperfect. I believe they've improved by being confident about communicating, not by being perfect in grammar.

The well over half of my students have reached target proficiency in both speaking and writing this year at the mid-year DWSBA. I've never had such percentages before. I think part of it is they are really amazing students, but I also try to cultivate and encourage the concept that we're not competing against each other, but we're all on the same team and we want to help everyone to succeed. I have used more precision partnering and I've been better at mentioning the team concept and thanking students for helping their classmates out better than before.

I can't compare my students' performance to previous years because this is the first year. However, I can see their progress from the beginning of the year. There are some students who can speak short paragraphs in full sentences and there are other students who can only use lists and words. I have one classroom with a couple of boys who have proven themselves real leaders. They started clapping when anyone accomplishes something particularly difficult or if I praise someone in the class. This is the class that is most apt to take risks, try new things and where everyone has amazing grades and all homework turned in. It's also one of the most talkative classes, although it's actually usually delving in more deeply into topics and not just chit-chat.

My major success this year was to create a friendly but challenging atmosphere in my DLI classes. Students rely on each other but they also know they need to work on their individual skills. Results show that 80% or more of students have reached the level needed for Spanish 3.

I really have appreciated being able to hear the successful strategies being used across the district. I think that it is really cool to hear that strategies we learn are useful and helpful throughout the year. I also took away a lot of useful tools. While not every PD gives me new ideas that I want to implement, there is always something that I can apply in my courses to help students sometime throughout the year. I like how I have further developed my course materials based on the rubric examples and assignment samples I have seen from colleagues here.

I would tell a new teacher that it is okay to mess up. You won't be perfect your first year and you probably will make mistakes throughout your career. Sometimes lesson plans don't go the way we wanted. Sometimes students forget the concepts as soon as they leave class. And sometimes, as a DLI/WL teacher, you will make mistakes with the language. And that is okay. What matters is that you are transparent and honest with your students that you messed up. If feelings get hurt, it is okay to admit you messed up and change your attitude. I have found that students are a lot more patient and forgiving than we sometimes give them credit for.
