They wanted to show that they were better than the other. They wanted to prove to the world that they could do before the other one could so the world wouldn't deny them anymore. Second was that they wanted to be the first and that they did first and not the other. They would try and try to be the first in the world to be something. They once again wanted to prove that they are better.
Third is that they wanted to show that they had more power and that they were not to be messed with. If they could get to space and even the moon first then you would not want to mess with them. We can even go to Mars and can even send Satellites to the red planet.
Next is that we can take a look at the world and learn about weather and what it might be like. We can see most storms before they hit you at all so you can be prepared for  what's going to happen.
Lastly we are thinking about sending men to a whole new planet millions of miles away. This trip would take 7-9 months to get there and we are trying to figure out how to survive on the planet and make even a colony on it.
