Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte has lots of Gothic Elements. Isolation is a big part of the story. The character seems to be locked up somewhere away from the outside world. The atmosphere is very gloomy and not a home like feeling. The character describes the place as "heath seemed prison-ground, exile limits". Another way we can see the character was isolated was when they said "I had had no communication by letter or message with the outer world: school-rules, school-duties, school-desired liberty". When I read that part it sounded like a boarding school. There's also intense emotion when the character says "I desired liberty; for liberty I gasped; for liberty I uttered a prayer; it seemed scattered on the wind then faintly blowing" and after the character says "Then, I cried, half desperate".

The excerpt written by Charlotte Bronte,"Jane Eyre" shows many different elements, global issues and IB concepts. Throughout this excerpt she talks about how she is isolated from the world. She says,"I had no communication by letter or by message with the outer world." This could also be considered as abuse or dehumanization because we can infer that she has been kidnapped or something along those lines. She also says," I tired of the routine of eight years in one afternoon." This shows the IB concepts of transformation and identity because she has been in that place for eight years and she now has given up that routine she's had. So far, it seems that if she went back into the real world she wouldn't know how to act or what to do since shes been gone for so long. Lastly we can see imagery as she says,"there was the blue horizon." This gives us an idea of where she is and maybe what time of day it is. Overall, this excerpt has many different ways to perceive it and also different elements, global issues, IB concepts and literary terms.

The excerpt given from "Jane Eyre" helps bring awareness to multiple global issues but a big one being of how mental issues can lead to chaos, both mentally and physically. For instance, in the excerpt the main character describes how they have been in the same location for at least eight years. They also mention how during these eight years, they have been cut off from any outside communication. Through the use of the IB concept representation, it can be inferred that the main character probably has some type of mental illness. Representation can be seen through the sentence, "...school-rules, school-duties, school-habits and notions, and voices, and faces and phrases, and costumes, and preferences, and antipathies-- such was what I knew of existence." This sentence represents how the main character lacked any perspectives from the real world and was isolated completely for a major part of their life, which could lead to mental decline. The global issue of how mental issues can lead to chaos both mentally and physically can be seen towards the end of the excerpt. Through the sentences, "I desired liberty, for liberty I gasped, for liberty I uttered a prayer." and "Then, I cried, half-desperate, 'grant me at least a new servitude!", it is shown how the main character finally cracked under their circumstances. The main characters mental issues lead to the overwhelming disparity of wanting liberty or at least a little freedom, and it was all let out at once in a chaotic way.

In the excerpt, Charlotte writes a lot about the global issue identity. One example is the statement "I tired of the routine of eight years in one afternoon." This shows that some change was made to her routine in order for he to further explore her identity. The text also states "I desired liberty; for liberty I gasped; for liberty I uttered a prayer." This statement speaks a lot about change upon herself which relates to identity. In the passage, Bronte uses a lot of literary terms, one being metaphors. She states "for liberty I gasped" By this, Bronte is giving the idea that she needs liberty like the air she breathes but in reality, liberty is not as necessary as air. She also speaks of hyperboles in this text. For example, "an age seemed to have elapsed since the day" She is exaggerating the passage of time. It is rather likely that time has felt like a long time due to her mental struggles and challenges.

In the excerpt the author uses things like global issues, IB concepts, literary elements and gothic novel elements to help the reader understand the reader. For instance, in the excerpt the author says "I had no communication by letter or message with the outer world." This is an example of the gothic novel element of isolation because it shows that the character has no contact with anyone outside of where she is. The author also says "prison-ground, exile limits" which creates a gloomy atmosphere and shows that overall the character is feeling very isolated and upset. The character says "school-rules, school-duties, school-habits and notions, and voices, and faces, and phrases, and costumes, and preferences, and antipathies-such was what I knew of existence." This is an example of imagery, the character is describing her daily routines and she is showing how constant and how tiring her daily duties are, she is constantly met with the same faces, the same routines, and the same words and she is just tired and frustrated.

The character also says that how the house is placed- within a boundary of rocks which is a sign of imagery- that Lowood seems more like a prison ground rather than an actual place to live "all within their boundary of rock and heath seemed prison-ground, exile limits." .

They also show global issues such as mental issues, which could also be seen as more abuse because they state having one single routine every single day, not having any variation at all. Wanting and needing to have some sort of new thing to do, to have some sort of simulation, "--such was what I knew of existence. And now I felt that it was no enough;".

They go on to even beg to liberty, liberty being a possible metaphor for freedom, to give her a new servitude. they are crying and desperate for new stimulation which shows a gothic element of intense emotion, but could easily also show damsel in distress if the character is seeing liberty as a person who could save them from their boring existence, " "Then," I cried, half desperate, "Grant me at least a new servitude!" ".
