What do novels teach us about how authors use word choice? by Nicole Vanaarde

Based on all 4 books “ The cellar” “ George” “ Left behind” and “ In darkness” taught us a lot about how authors use word choice. Based on the word choice the author chooses to use puts the reader more into the book. In all the books there was a lot of descriptive words making you feel like you were there with them and experiencing it. Also author's word choice sets the mood. Using words that means happy sets a happy mood and tone and using words that are more saddening sets a more sad mood and tone. For example in the cellar the quote “ the blows to her body were harsh and brutal and every single one tore through me.” describes what the girls went through and makes you feel sad for them, makes you want to help them. in the book In Darkness there is a quote that says “ it's getting too hot in here, the concrete above me is grinding, and i am seriously afraid i've entered hell” makes you feel as if your getting hot yourself it makes tension build up. Word choice makes the story the story.

How our novels teach us about setting by MacKenzie Harland

The setting can impact the characters and the readers. In the book “Cellar” the setting is in a cellar which is a dark and scary place. This makes the reader feel like she/he was in it. Also this sets a depressing mood/tone and the characters who are in the book feel these ways. Many of the settings impact the way the characters feel. In the book “George” the main setting is school. This is where most of the conflicts take place. This also impacts how George feels because he gets bullied here. In the book “In Darkness” the main setting where things take place is the town village. The character is having flashbacks about it and they don't really have a happy tone or a sad tone about it. They are in the middle. This setting impacts how the reader feels also. This setting makes the reader feel scared because the character was never safe and a lot of violence happened there. The book “Left Behind” also had a suspenseful setting. The airport is where the disappearances take place. This makes the characters feel scared and confused. Based on the setting you can see how the characters are going to be and how the reader will feel. If the setting is dark the reader and characters will most likely feel scared. If the setting is happy that is most likely how the reader and characters will feel.
