Netiquette, or internet etiquette, is the importance of how one should appropriately behave online. There are many rules that are required of us to follow in order to create a safe, learning environment for all people. We should obey copyright laws and avoid overusing symbols not fitting to the context. Practicing netiquette is important for our students because it teaches them the proper way to behave and treat others online as well as offline.

There are many users who do not understand nor practice the rules of netiquette. In order to protect yourself, you must learn what you can and cannot share about yourself. Do not share personal information like name, address, and phone number and do not share your passwords. Be careful with what photos and videos you upload.
Be proactive, at the first sign of suspicious activity, immediately tell your parent or a teacher. These adults will give you suggestions on how to handle the situation. Do not post something your future self or future connections would not want to see.

Users are at different experience levels with the use of the digital world. If you need to point out a mistake, do so in a forgiving and kind way. They may have a spelling error, begin flame wars, or give a long answer but be kind about it.
Correct the user privately and not in a public forum. There are only words online, the user receiving may misinterpret your helpfulness. Remember you are not an expert and we can all learn from other users online. Having proper netiquette yourself does not give you complete control to correct everyone else.

Netiquette #3: Remember the Human

One rule that my parents always taught me as well as teachers are, “Don’t do something to someone else, that you wouldn’t want to be done to you.” Imagine how you would feel if something upsetting happened to you. You should always stand up for yourself, but don’t do it by putting someone else down. This is called Remember the Human in the media world.

When communicating with someone online you are not necessarily speaking to them face to face, you are looking at a computer screen. Therefore, many people don’t understand your tone of voice or any physical features you are having. Since they don’t see you and you don’t see them, many things can be misinterpreted.
When you're communicating through cyberspace you have to realize that your words are written and the chances of them going away after you wrote them is slim to none. Those words are stored somewhere that you will not be able to access them. Once their online their always online. The media is there for you to use freely and to explore the world, but just remember there are humans on the other side of that screen and your words may never be erased.

Netiquette #4: Share Expert Knowledge

When asking questions online rather than asking them to someone in person you are going to get more feedback, because numerous people are reading your question and giving you their knowledge. Also, don’t be afraid to share what you know and your knowledge to other peoples’ questions online. One important thing to do when you get all these emails worth of supplies is to write a little summary about the information you obtained and share it.

If you’re an expert you can do a variety of things to share your knowledge. If you run a discussion group you can post some FAQ. You can also research a topic that you think would be interesting to other and write up a summary and post it. Sharing your knowledge with others not only benefits other people, but it makes the world a better place.

How to teach Netiquette #1?

In order to teach my students this netiquette, I would show examples of what they should and should not post/share with others online including passwords and personal information. Also how to say no to users who pressure to know details not pertaining to them. And even if you have really close friends, you still shouldn't share passwords. I would then let them practice what to post and have them practice with each other.

How to teach Netiquette #3?

When teaching my students about Netiquette #3, Remember the Human, I will first remind them that words can be hurtful even if their not face-to-face. I also would explain to them that even though when you're on a computer and you only see a screen, words are still very powerful and if you wouldn't want it said to you don't say it to others. Also, that anything you write online will be there forever because its stored in a software there is invisible to them.
Another way to help the students understand why it is so important to respect the person on the other side on the computer screen is by showing them a video to engage them. Lastly, I would create a padlet asking them to post one thing they learned from the video. They are allowed to talk with one other individual from the class about the video.
