" The concept of an artist going deeper into their sound, not only lyrically, but also in order to portray a feeling of longing or through music to create the appearance of a void. Depth is the factor in a song that keeps it from being just an average assembly of notes and words. Depth takes the simplicity of a composition and gives the listener the tools to identify with the correct emotion the artist intended to portray. " I looked into modern music and how depth plays a part in pop music. "Depth is essentially what makes music more than just noise. It’s the different levels to a song. These levels can be individual instrument or vocal parts that stimulate specific tones and moods in a song, and all of this contributes to the displayed idea of the song’s message. Looking into the modern world of music, pop music is known for being upbeat and catchy. Typically, pop music is simply for dancing and often the lyrics said are generally superficial and without a bigger purpose. Pop music is what makes the most money and a good amount of it is made for making money. This genre of music is typically less complex than classical, or any other non-vocal, music." I looked into the specific songs, "Smooth" by Santana ft. Rob Thomas and "Hanging by a Moment" by Lifehouse. These are two of my absolute favorite songs in existence. However, Smooth doesn't have much depth or complex emotions. It's mostly just a dancing song, not that that is necessarily a bad thing to be, it just means there's not much to the song. Lifehouse, is a more melancholy song, it's also about love and there's just not much to it. It's very repetitive, and there's not a lot of different things going on. You'll see the same type of thing in most pop music.
