He wrote "Burn the Ships" in response to his wife's struggle with addiction and her determination to overcome it (Geil). Courtney Smallbone, who is Luke's wife, is the audience of the piece. The purpose of the song is to encourage Courtney as she goes through the hard process of abandoning her addiction (Price). The song also reminds her that though leaving her addiction is hard, it is for the better. In "Burn the Ships," Luke Smallbone effectively ties in the emotions of sadness and hopefulness to fully explain the depth of the situation. He combines these two emotions in the lyrics "We can rise up from the dust and walk away/ We can dance upon our heartache, yeah." The idea of rising up gives the listeners a feeling of hope. Similarly, the word "dance" gives a joyful feeling, normally associated with happiness and rejoicing. While these parts of the lyrics are happy, they also have phrases like "from the dust" and "upon our heartache" The phrase "from the dust" can have multiple meanings. For example, it can be seen as a new beginning, a hopeful idea. Biblically, Adam was created from dust. This phrase could be referring to this event and having a new beginning after struggling with an addiction. This idea is supported by the lyric "We're comin' clear, we're born again." "From the dust" can also be seen as being on the ground or another low, dirty place. Rising up from this is also hopeful, but it also has a sense of sadness for having been at that place. The word "heartache" in "We can dance upon our heartache, yeah" shows a deep sorrow that is being experienced despite choosing the joyfulness to dance. The lyric "So long to shame, walk through the sorrow" has a similar theme. Shame in itself is inherently shameful. However, in this phrase the speaker is no longer going to be tied to this emotion and is saying "so long" to it. This gives the feeling of hope. The second part of the lyric has more of a sad emotion tied with it with the word "sorrow," but it also has the feeling of hope as the lyric says "walk through the sorrow," persevering through the sadness. This idea of feeling hope amid struggles is encouraging and effective in showing Luke's message as it makes his audience feel this hope amid their pain. 

Other lyrics displaying sadness or a similar emotion include "All castaway on a lonely shore" and "Dry your tears and wave goodbye."  "A lonely shore" gives the emotion of loneliness and sadness. Similarly, "dry your tears and wave goodbye" also gives the emotion of sadness. Loneliness, goodbyes, and tears are all associated with sadness. However, the phrases "Our hopeful lungs can breathe again" still relays hope amid these sad lyrics. To breathe again is to have a sense of hope and freedom. This lyric gives those emotions. The phrase "I can see in your eyes, dear/ It's hard to take for a moment more" shows the speaker's experience with the message that he is singing along with his and his wife's character. Luke Smallbone has gone through this experience which gives him credibility in what he is saying in this phrase. From the word "dear," it is clear that Luke is sympathetic to his wife's situation, showing him as kind and caring. The phrase "It's hard to take for a moment more" shows the character of his wife. She is going through this addiction, but it seems that it is a place that she does not want to be. She has a yearning to get out of her struggle of addiction and does not seem that she accepts its presence in her life; its presence is hard for her to take. This example of ethos is effective in relaying Luke's message as it shows his sincerity to the pain that Courtney is experiencing in his encouragement as well as Courtney's want and acceptance of this encouragement to overcome her addiction. 

The line "And if you need a refuge/ I will be right here until the end" demonstrates Luke's character. He is fully there to support his wife and be "a refuge," a place of safety and comfort, for her. He is a kind and supportive person. This has credibility attached to it as Luke Smallbone has had to go through this and be this support for his wife as she battled her addiction. The purpose of the song was to encourage his wife as she fought against her addiction. Pathos was used to show the effects of encouragement amid pain and the effect encouragement can have on those who are being encouraged. Ethos was used to show the kindness of the speaker, who is giving the encouragement to those who are struggling.
