Phuntsok Namgyal Tibet Children's Village North India (story of volunteer activity)

A three-month-old baby admitted to TCV in 1973

Back in 1973 we were quite alarmed as well as taken aback to see a three months old baby brought from Bhandara to get admission in TCV. Probably he could be the smallest kid ever to be admitted to the school. Unlike other schools TCV as we always say is “A Home Away from Home” and we truly feel the warmth and love of a family. He was brought from Bhandara Tibetan settlement when his mother drowned in the river close to the Settlement. It was impossible for his father to look after him. TCV was no doubt very happy to have a new family member wrapped in a warm blanket. Tashi Phuntsok was kept in our baby room and started crawling happily with the other babies. Learning to walk, run and jump he grew up very strong and healthy. In the absence of his biological mother, TCV made sure that he didn’t feel the pain and pang of the separation from his family. He found a family far more caring and multitudinous, who are like his brothers and sisters. Home mothers and aunts are like his real family. Among many other students, he has a very close connection with his home mother Choela who is now retired and lives in our retirement quarter. This is the second time Tashi requested me to hand over the money he sent through Western Union. He doesn’t want his home mother to disappear and drown like his own mother.

Although Tashi, like many of our ex-students, did not wear the graduation gown and caps on the completion of class X and XII he walked past our gate with a strong imprint of life’s lesson to be grateful and helpful. He is strong and always feels grateful to his family TCV. Today he works as security personnel and with strong imprints from SEE learning which of course was not christened by then but the philosophy of SEE learning was there as part of our everyday learning. He is helpful, strong, and approachable. Whenever he visits India he makes sure to meet his home mother and takes her on a pilgrimage and takes care of her. He recollects his days when he was a baby and visits our baby room and spends the entire day with them.

“Not all storms come to disrupt your life, some come to clear your path.” ― Paulo Coelho, Author of The Alchemist
https://www.facebook.com/namgyal.phuntsok.7/posts/4439844279412059

The United States says some 900,000 people in Tigray, which has been under an Ethiopian government blockade since late June, face famine conditions. The World Health Organization says medical supplies have not been allowed into the region of some 6 million people.

Despite his mention of optimism, the U.N. chief also warned that “ongoing military operations in some parts of Ethiopia remain a challenge to the peace process and sour the confidence-building measures that we hope are being taken by all parties in the conflict.”

Every day another humanitarian crisis unfolds. So many of our EClub members live with ongoing issues of food scarcity, housing shortage, unclean water, poor educational resources and disease. None of us are immune to daily life has become.
Like me I think we all wonder what one single person can do. The problems are so overwhelming.
Our Club President, Frank Quinn, uses is experience, knowledge and skills to create an education program that is low cost and easy to share across the lobe. KES is already in use in a number of our members' countries and is in use ere locally to assist refugees and immigrants and eventually could be tailored to assist the displaced people of the Ukraine.
What can the rest of us do? ShelterBox is a international partner of Rotary International. Many ShelterBoxes are already in use around the world. And our club has purchased a number of them over the years.
It would be easy to suggest we could each make a donation to ShShelterBox (https://www.shelterbox.org/) but I am thinking a bit bigger and bolder! Whatif we were to add a KES phone to every ShelterBox?? Every ShelterBox is filled with tools of all description - tools, blankets, emergency water, lighting and items for children.
I expect to see Frank tomorrow and am going to broach this HUGE undertaking to him So what do YOU think?
What can you DO? You could start by familiarizing yourself with ShelterBoxand learning all about the KES program - right here on our own website.
