I worked for DPS ( Denver Public Schools) for about 5 years. DPS utilized a variety of charter networks and used the portfolio management to offer school-choice at a high-level. I noticed that the charter schools did not have their fair share of students with more severe disabilities and the application process appeared to segregate high academic performance from low. Charter schools results were mixed, but generally showed improvement in test scores. I knew that the majority of students came from low SES backgrounds and they recruited families on the promise they would prepare their child for college.

I did not start with a good knowledge of charter schools. I assumed that charter schools were similar to private schools and very selective (which is not true!) I did know that there some push and pull between charters and public schools.

I was really interested in the ways districts could partner with charter schools. I think many times public schools are pulled in so many directions and can't always meet the needs of each student effectively. Partnering with charter schools could really benefit everyone involved.

I remember watching a documentary in undergrad and discussing the idea, but didn't have as much of an idea of the legal/financial specifics that this presentation honed in on.

One detail mentioned that piqued my interest was that of the 'hybrid' charters which operate more in concert with the districts. There were so many issues of sustainability mentioned for charters like legal hurdles in zoning and red tape purposefully put up by districts themselves, so I'd be interested in learning more about what latitude and freedom is given to make these a charter and what benefits are reaped by partnering together.

I am curious about the innate competitiveness that seems destructive to charter success. Within education we want our districts to be successful, and we want our individual schools successful. How do we maintain a positive partnership with new ideas recognizing one school's success is not a condemnation on another's different educational choices? This is why the hybrid charter's which live under the umbrella of a district are very intriguing to me.

What a fabulous presentation! Thank you Monica and Alexandria! I've had limited experience with charter schools, but the information presented that connects to what I did already know was around student performance and public support. I worked in a school district last year (Metro Nashville Public Schools) that had a large charter presence, and they did boast gains in student performance, as compared to the traditional public schools, but there were many factors impacting student enrollment that in my opinion don't make the data fair. For example, charters are able to have different expectations and rules for student behavior, family involvement, enrollment qualifications, ect. Also, anecdotally, I met a lot of teachers who spoke about the lack of support and left charter schools for traditional public schools for a better work-life balance and benefits.

I would like to learn more about the "hybrid" charters and how these schools can work more in cooperation with school districts to address more immediate challenges in certain communities with increase resources and funding. It seems like cooperation is key, with a shared goal of improving student achievement.
