It happens at night in dark alleys and in dark abandoned buildings. The story of Oliver Twist is a dark story about corruption, violence and terror. The novel is mainly about poverty and crime.

· Nancy is a prostitute who is Bill's girlfriend. She's different from the others in Fagin's gang: she's got a bit of humanity.

Monks is a wicked young man, who is Oliver's enemy and also his half-brother.

· Mr. Bronlow is Oliver's protector in the story. He's a man of good position, generous and with a big heart. He treats Oliver like his own son.
