What is the book about?

The book is Set as the flashback in a coerced confession of a political prisoner, the book tells the story of the South Vietnamese Government in 1975 and the events that followed in the overall exile in our very own los angeles california we follow the very interesting story through the eyes and the perspective of an undercover communist agent that happens to be both Vietnamese and French. We actually never get to know the spys name throughout the entire story which although is surprising it should be expected in reality as the guy is an actual spy, crazy right?! His story is followedall the way from the fall of Saigon, to refugee camps and relocation in Los Angeles, to his time as a film consultant in the Philippines, and finally to his return and subsequent imprisonment in Vietnam, and the entire time he is unnamed.

Main Points the author intends to get across?

There are more than a few points that id say the author is trying to emphasize throughout the story however id say that the following ones are overall the most important or at least the ones that stuck out the most to me.The first one id say would have to be the common theme of cultural duality, of which i feel like the author used through the story to i guess in a way describe or even explore the spys individual racial ambivalence, and also just the overall social ambivalence of the Vietnamese refugees in the U.S. The second one that i would honestly say is the most prevalent is just the overall exploration of how the overall identity of the Asian people is in the united states. the author actually specifically looks at things like the racism that Vietnamese refugees go through in the United States for a number of reasons one being stereotypes about Asian people, as well as just overall systematic racism.

My quotes from the book ...

1.I often have trouble grasping the tones of readings movies etc. so This first line put it into perspective for me immediately. The first quote from the text that stood out to me was actually on page 33 in chapter 1 that reads “the capitain who hobbled a bit because of vernereal disease , threatened to commit suicide unless i found more seats. I offered him my revolver and he skulked it off.”.After reading that it was such a wake up call in all honesty and offered me as the one reading way more insight as to the seriousness of the situation. Prior to reading i didnt the restrictions and the need there was to flee and that there were indeed so many who were left behind.
2.Another quote that I found interesting was the quote from Page 80 chapter 5 that read "the marines were on the wall pounding anybody who tried to come up... help me we have 500 people at this compound get us out" this quote just overall showed me the reality of what transpired in saigon.

My favorite character?

While there are a few characters throughout the story i feel like in my opinion my most favorite character would have to be Claude. I feel like most people would actually choose the narrator but i mean come on we don't wanna be too basic now do we. Sure we can follow the events of what goes on throughout his journey but i found it more interesting and just overall took more of a liking to the writing of Claude as a character all the way from the fact that Claude is one 16th black and still a member of the time periods CIA or maybe even that he acts as the narrators mentor of sorts or to the fact that Claude literally meets up with the narrator across the world in the united states i feel like claude is just a consistent likeable addition to the novel.

I feel like after this reading ive learned so much about the Vietnam war besides the vague teachings of things I've learned back in high school as well as the things that are commonly seen/shown in American schools and media. Also the fact that so many people were left behind as well as the whole chaotic occurrences were all things that i had almost 0 knowledge of. I also find it interesting that the vietnam war is in all seriousness a failure and a loss for america but we seem to still control the reception and overall i guess "marketing" you could say when it comes to said war.
