History of American Indians in the United States

Before the settlers came to this country it was inhabited by different nations. They knew the land and knew how to live and get what they needed from it. As time went on, the number of Indians grew smaller and smaller because of war with the settlers and disease. As more settlers came to the new land they continued to take the Indians land and push them farther westward. According to the test, American Indians live in 26 states, including Alaska, mostly on reservations and in rural areas. Others have ventured out into cities along the west coast.

Traditional Perceptions of Health and Illness

According to the book, health reflects living in total harmony with nature and having the ability to survive under exceedingly difficult circumstances. They believe that the human body should be treated with respect just as the earth should be treated the same. "The land belongs to life, life belongs to the land, and the land belongs to itself". They believe that in order to maintain health you need to maintain a relationship with nature. They believe that there is a reason for every illness. They believe that illness is the price that you pay for something in the past or something that will happen in the future.

Traditional Healing Methods

To the native people, a traditional healer would be a medicine man or woman. They are wise and know the ways of the land and nature. They perform special ceremonies to determine the cause of illness and treatment. They practice an act of purification to maintain harmony with nature and cleanse their body and spirit. According to Native American Healing Traditions, History indicates that each tribe would have one or more elders who were groomed in the healing arts. These individuals would serve as herbalists, healers, and spirit communicators.
