Vicki: I think it essential to provide process skills opportunities across the curriculum to allow student's an opportunity to expand and build on their knowledge and background skills. It is important to do so, they may apply new found knowledge across the curriculum and in their lives.

Social studies content begins with being able to read and comprehend the content. When students are able to utilize the process skills when reading the rich content that social studies text contains, the students are able to understand the structure and purpose of the text and focus on the specific content it is conveying. Just like in reading, students encounter various structures, vocabulary/signal words that help them determine the type of thinking that is required to process the infomation in front of them. When you provide opportunities for students to learn the specific social studies content you are required to teach with these standads, you are giving your students the skills they need to be successful independent readers/writers/ learners.

Allowing students opportunities to utilize process skills is important. Students see these skills in all aspects of their academic journey. If used, processing skills help students to have a deeper understanding of the skill they're learning/applying. I also feel that it's just as important (if not more important) for the teacher to model HOW to use those processing skills.
