There was a lot of tension due to the fact that most white people didn't want desegregation.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Anyone could attend the suburban schools outside of the city, but students of color were forced to take hour long bus rides every day. The schools in the 80s and 90s were predominately white, but that has changed since and METCO has actually really helped students do better in school. However, busing was a huge burden to the students that were being forced to take the hour long ride. Most of the time the students of color were the ones who were being asked to take the bus to the suburban school, and for many parents that was no longer worth it after a few years because the kids would often travel through hostile neighborhoods as well as the long ride.</div>]]></description>
