Who has time to find all the books and resources they need to do their lessons? How often have you rushed into the library and asked the TL if he or she knew of a book that you could use for your lesson? A TL has access to all of the latest materials. They spend much of her time looking for books that she feels would be beneficial for the teachers and the students in the school. Not only do Classroom teachers not have the time to search through websites and magazines to look for the the latest and greatest resources, they don’t know what resources the Learning Commons already has. In many cases, the teacher librarian has spent years ordering books, videos and magazines. They know exactly where to go to find exactly what you need. Without this valuable person, the classroom teacher would be forced to spend much of their planning time looking for the books they need to carry out their lessons.

Collaboration!

The Teacher Librarian is the perfect person to collaborate with when planning and creating units and lessons. We have all been told that we should plan with our teaching partners… But how often do you and your teaching partner actually have time to collaborate? It is very rare that teachers that teach the same grade have the same planning time. The truth is, most teachers plan most of their lessons and units alone. The TL is the perfect person to fill this void. They are as familiar with the curriculum document as any teacher out there. In fact, they know more about the documents than any other because they spend so much time working in all divisions and many different topics. The TL may have ideas that she has used before with different teachers. She will know what resources are available and if they aren’t readily available, she will know where to get them.

In a world that is constantly changing and growing, the TL is an invaluable member of the staff. Parents are busy and teachers are swamped with teaching and assessing. Who is left to help the children navigate their ways around the Internet? The librarian is often left the erroneous task of teaching the students about Digital citizenship. Not just one, but an entire school population. The Internet can be such a confusing and dangerous place for children and adolescents. Having a TL that can help students safely navigate their way around the Internet is extremely important. It is often the TL that creates and monitors the school’s Twitter account, School Blog, Facebook page, etc. When there is an event going on at the school, it is up to her to let the community know about it through the use of Social Media.

The TL is the closest thing a school has to a technology expert. They are responsible for buying new pieces of technology for the Learning Commons. They are trained on any new devices that enter the building. The responsibility is then put on her to train the rest of the staff and students. This is true for new apps and programs that are installed on any of the schools devices. Without the TL’s expertise and knowledge, teachers would not have the ability to have their students use all the great new technology available to them. The TL also makes sure that any technology that is stored in the LC is share equitably amongst the students and teachers. They work tirelessly creating schedules and when things go missing or become disorganized, the TL is there to get things back to normal.

The Learning Commons really is the Hub of the school. It’s where all the action is!! The TL is the person that is responsible for making the space inviting for all students, teachers and visitors. It is where the school’s community is created. Students need a place where they can go to explore, imagine and create. The TL is responsible for making this happen. She hosts guest speakers, organizes schedules for teachers and students, makes the space for groups to meet and collaborate. She ensures that the schedules are flexible so the space can be utilized by everyone. Students come here to feel safe, share ideas and find a true passion for learning.
