Built in 1591 to house the novices interested in religious life, the convent was erected by two Franciscan friars, Friar Antonio dos Mártirese, Friar Antonio das Chagas, at the behest of the Superior of Order in Brazil and at the request of Vasco Fernandes Coutinho- the son. In this construction was the Church dedicated to San Francisco, monastery / cloister and the Chapel of the Third Order of Penance, then a cruise was added at the beginning of the access slope (1744) and finally a "provisional" cemetery that worked from 1856 to 1908 to principle only for the Franciscans and the elite of that era, but later opened as a public cemetery.
