Point: Another area where we see the Ionic order appearing more ornate and elegant than the Doric is in the column itself.

Evidence: The columns of the Doric order are usually wider and more tapered, sometimes lacking fluting, whereas the Ionic columns have fluting with elaborate arises and fillets.

Analysis: The arises and fillets give more shape and structure to the columns and allow them to have more consistent and stronger shape all the way down the shaft.

Point: The ionic order is not more feminine than the doric order.

Evidence: Doric order includes the guttae on the bottom of the triglyph.

Analysis: The guttae provide an extra level of intricacy to the triglyph. The ionic order, however, doesn't have any triglyphs, so doesn't include this detail.

COUNTERPOINT:
Even though the ionic doesn't have any triglyphs, the frieze allows for sculptures to be put on the temple. This gives the opportunity for a narrative to be established through the sculptures and put the temple in context. Therefore there is more opportunity for the temple to be ornate.

Conc: Doric includes intricacies such as the guttae, however, the continuous frieze in the ionic allows for more detail in the temple. Equally the shaft as a whole is slimmer and thus more delicate looking.

Analysis:
The tapering on the Doric order is much more pronounced and further apart whereas the Ionic column's tapering is more detailed and ornate with the fillets close together in a decorative design. This creates an elegance and feminine feel to it.

Point: Ionic order is found more feminine than doric with the differences between the detailed volute on the ionic order compared to the simplistic abacus and echinus.

Evidence: curved more intricate structure of the volute. This is in comparison with the block like structure of the abacus and echinus, displaying simplistic shapes and little detail. An key example displaying the detail of the volute is shown on the Erechtheion in Athens, especially with such a decorative echinus below the volute with intricate designs of lotus and palmette.

Analysis: The curves and intricate designs displayed on the ionic order enhances the feminine quality compared to a more basic doric order

P: Ionic order is more ornate in the columns with the inclusion of caryatids in some temples, instead of columns and capitals.
E: on the Syphnian Treasury two korai are inlaid into the columns. They were highly decorated with paint, gilding, coloured gems and jewellery.
A: The highly colourful and decorated image of the maidens makes the column more ornate and sophisticated than the Doric, with entirely plain columns.

POINT: The capital of an Ionic order temple is more elegant than the Doric order capital.

EVIDENCE: This is seen as there is a volute, and the capital is more curved. Where a Doric capital is separated into 3 sections (abacus, echinus and necking) with rectangular shaping.

ANALYSIS: The Ionic order is therefore more aesthetically pleasing and elegant, as it has a flowing design (volute). The doric order shows a more simple capital, with sharp, rigid shapes, making it less delicate.
