Pi’s deep devotion to Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam is a frequent topic throughout the book. Hinduism was the first religion he knew of because he had been Hindu his whole life. With both his encounters with Islam and Christianity, Pi, being the inquisitive young boy he is, is merely curious about these religions. He eventually follows both, becoming a dedicated Muslim, Hindu, and Christian (participle). As an adolescent, he would pray and attend masses. Even when stranded, Pi did his best to face Mecca when he prayed. In adulthood, his faith persists despite the hopeless months he spent stranded at sea. When the author visits, he describes Pi’s current home; multiple items of religious meaning adorn its interior. He describes Pi’s house as “a temple” with “a framed picture of Ganesha,” “a small framed picture of the Virgin Mary of Guadalupe,” and “a shrine in the kitchen” with two pictures: one of Ganesha and one of Krishna (45-46). Pi’s house, a temple brimming with religious articles (absolute), illustrates his persistent and committed faith that began during adolescence. Throughout the years, his faith grew stronger as he experienced tests of survival and hope. His following of multiple beliefs is also telling of his open-mindedness. Most people only follow one religion due to different ideals; however, Pi is committed to three religions, as shown by the various religious objects in his adult home.
