the depressive state of post World War I Germany. He would collect garbage and various items from the street to be used in his artwork pieces. His artwork was known for forcing the viewer to actually experience the piece, rather than solely view it. Schwitters also actively produced artist journals, something that we as a class had a hand in as well. Our visuals journals began, similarly to us students, as blank canvases and grew and developed over the weeks of the course to represent our growth and development of the concepts of art we explored in class. His distinctive style of painting is both colourful and sophisticated yet retains an innocent charm, and appeals to young and old alike. He uses a process called as Silk Screening or serigraphy, which involves a series of layered colours of ink which come together to create a whole print. Areas of a framed screen are marked off using a non-porous stencil. Ink is applied to the entire frame, and the spaces not covered with a stencil will allow the paint to adhere to the paper below. 

In class, we had the opportunity to play with paint to see what kind of colours we can creat when we mix them together. In addition, we got to try to create different shades of one colour and see how we can make it into a lighter or darker shade. In the art piece "Walking Alone," Ted Harrison uses mostly the colours red and blue to create the purples shades as well as different shades of each colour, such as a light pink and sky blue.

Influential as both artist and activist, Yuxweluptun merges traditional iconography with representations of the environment and the history of colonization, resulting in his powerful, contemporary imagery; his work is replete with masked fish farmers, super-predator oil barons, abstracted ovoids and unforgettable depictions of a spirit-filled, but now toxic, natural world.

In class, we had the opportunity to bring in a personal cultural object. As Yuxweluptun represents his culture in his artwork, we got to share a part of our culture. In the picture below, Yuxweluptun shows different cultures intersecting (i.e., notice the flags of different countries on their ties). She uses recycled materials and materials in nature as well in sculptures to create elaborate pieces of work. 

In class we created our own art pieces sewing pieces of felt to create a visual image. She uses her art to express meaningful messages such as awareness around poverty. She also believes that knitting is more than just a domestic activity that it is usually associated with. Fortunately, we are able to see Sparrow's work on the UBC campus. It was given to the campus during its centennial celebration. This piece is particular is called two-headed serpent and it was dedicated by Sparrow, who is from Musqueam. It remains on the campus as a representation of the relationship between UBC and the Musqueam people. He carefully hides tiny figurines in public places and then takes a photograph to document his creation. The tiny figurines are taken from model train sets, remodeled, painted and left on the streets. Although miniature in size, his art creations touch on larger ideas of globalization and melancholy of living in a big city. He expresses his sympathy to all the little people trying to get by in a huge world. Slinkachu’s images have been collected in best-selling books and his work has been exhibited globally.

His work focusses on exploring cultural identity, colonialism, and post colonialism through a variety of media such as painting, photography, film, performance and sculpture. He makes use of brightly colored “African” Dutch wax fabric in his artistic creations. Interestingly, Shonibare uses assistants to make works under his direction as he has a physical disability which paralyses one side of his body. I found it interesting to read that his creativity has not been hindered due to this physical disability. Rather, he relies on a team of trusted artists to realize his artistic vision for him. As Shonibare’s disability has increased with age, he has also become increasingly open about discussing his disability and its impact on being a creative artist. I find this extremely commendable as it widens the platform for other artists who would also like to create space for themselves in a creative field.
