My color pencil of Teaching in a Diverse Society represents several things. The overall picture was done in colored pencil. It is a light blue colored owl with a right wing that is covered in many different colors and shapes, a round hole in the right wing itself, an apple on the left wing and the owl is holding a small circle also filled with many different shapes and colors. The owl has traditionally been the symbol for knowledge, and light blue is the traditional color of education. The traditional symbol for a teacher is the apple. The many different shapes and colors under the owls right wing represent the diversity of the children that we teach. The hole in the wing represents the children who are left behind for whatever reason. The smaller circle with diverse colors and shapes represents the special needs children, smaller in numbers than main stream kids but just as important. The owl keeps the children under its wing for protection, and also holds on to the special needs children.

I chose to do this in digital art because I don’t know how to draw. My poster shows inclusion by including a group of diverse people from different parts of the world. As you can see there’s a stack of books that represent education with words that say hello in different languages. I put this because I wanted people to know that even though in many classes everyone speaks English we as educators should be aware that not all of our students know how to speak English because they come from different places and we should include part of them in our classrooms by implementing books or labeling things in their language. For example, when I was little I wanted to know what my second-grade teacher was reading or what she was saying. I enjoyed hearing her voice change but I feel like I missed the opportunity to learn what the book was trying to teach. I wished she would’ve translated into both English and Spanish that way I would’ve had the same experiences as my classmates. I wanted to show equity in the poster by including a boy in a wheelchair to represent that he has a fair and same education as the rest of us. Although he might be in a wheelchair, the world and education system would help him accommodate his needs in order for him to succeed in his education and beyond.

For my art piece I chose to create a welcome sign. I chose this design because it includes children of different skin colors, different races, and a child with a wheelchair. I would like for the children that enter my class to feel welcomed and that it is ok to look different. I would also ask each family to bring in a picture we could display which will show the variety of backgrounds we have in our class. My goal would be to help all the children feel like they belong.

The world is at the bottom to show our youth going out into the world to be an example of how to value, accept, and appreciate all diverse cultures to create a world where everyone belongs.

My art piece resembles peace among people from different walks of life in the educational setting. I incorporated all of our semester's module terms that contribute to a diverse society and incorporated them together, alongside each other, into the form of a peace symbol. Outside of the peace sign I drew figures of people all around holding hands to represent unity and respect among humans. I also added a few images on the outer corners of my poster that relate to class and diversity. Lastly, I decorated all over with little designs to cheer things up and bring some pop of color to the white background.

For my art piece for teaching in a diverse society I choose to create a digital drawing of a crayola box of crayons because this represents that there a lot of children with different colors of skin. There a lot of different cultures, races, ethnicities, genders, religions, and everyone. The children represent the different colors of the world. The crayola box is the different diversities of children and all these colors represent unity of the children in the classroom. We accept and value diversity in the classroom. The crayola box represents education in a classroom and that we value and accept and appreciate each other. This picture is an example of all the children in the world to be value, and accept all the diverse cultures to create a world were everyone belongs. The unity of children represent the friendships and relationship with others in schools and other communities.

For my art piece I decided to draw portraits of a diverse group of children with different ethnicities, special needs, religions, and conditions. The reason I chose to go this route is because I feel it represents the wide variety of children within the classroom and the way that while each child is different they all can be so interconnected and have such unique traits and abilities that can bring them together. I wrote in the center “we’re all special. We’re all one” I wrote this because it helps express why diversity within all environments is so important because everyone is there individual self but that’s what brings us together and helps us all grow and learn.

My drawing represents Social Justice Right with two different hands. The different hands that represent different diversity in society. My social justice drawing with two different hands that represents diversity in society reaching to holding hands. I want to show they’re reaching for each other's hand because it will show that they are within the civil rights. Civil rights will show the child’s empathy for them being hurt when seeing the cause of bias. It will help children understand the capacities and fairness, and their cognitive skills. It will help them see what’s happening around them. Children would build a sense of safety and will show them that they will be treated fairly. This will give the children a chance to experience opportunities for children to practice and understand skills of what's untrue and will include unfairness. These issues can arise by including gender, race, and disabilities. Children can see, hear, and test against the notions of kindness and they will see how it can be fair. Children will develop respect for others and that will help them develop a sense of self. When they have a sense of self they will be able to have caring relationships. When students are exposed or hear someone being bullied or teased would make social justice their curriculum. When making social justice their curriculum it will help children see different holidays and they can engage in different plays as well. Plays and art activities will help children understand themselves. It will help children understand themselves by their own identities and how they interact with those around them.

For my art piece I really wanted to focus on ableism as my topic. For my art piece I drew a picture of two people, one is in a wheelchair and the other is not. As shown in the picture I drew physical steps. The steps are correlated with success, as the steps get bigger and bigger so does your success. I drew the man not using the wheelchair running up the steps. Although the man without the wheelchair is going to reach the top, the man with the wheelchair can not. The man using the wheelchair is stuck at the bottom of the staircase because he can not physically go up the steps with his wheelchair. I used the staircase symbolizing our society and the obstacles disabled people face everyday. People with disabilities face discrimination everyday. Teaching in a diverse society is so important to help educate others about ableism, so that every child has an equal opportunity when in and outside the classroom.

The poster I have created is supposed to emphasize the importance in our differences. Differences are valuable. They create stories and lessons. They shape our character, perspective, and outlooks. It is a positive representation of our cultural, physical, and background differences. It gives us reason to love and celebrate these things. Just as different fonts and colors are enjoyable, so are our differences. The puzzle pieces displayed in the poster represent the uniqueness in each piece. While there is one unlike another, they fit together and the result is something beautiful. We are each our own puzzle piece. When we come together, we can do amazing things.

For my Artivism I have chosen to do a watercolor of a picture from a book that really impacted me. Jack Frost vs. The Abominable Snowman by Craig Manning struck me as more than just a child’s book about two characters racing against each other. I first read this book a couple years back to my children and thought it was a fun interactive book for the children. After taking this class, I reopened this book to find meaning I had not discovered until now. This book reveals solutions to our society. Our society is diverse and complicated. We have all come to this land to live and work with one another, but we must come together to create a prosperous and harmonious society. This book reveals that we must be creative in our struggles to find peace. Jack Frost vs. The Abominable Snowman can be viewed as two different races who thought they had to battle against one another. They believed that they were in a race to see who was going to be the best, but to live and be in the same place, they needed to be creative and solve problems with one another not against one another. In, Jack Frost vs. The Abominable Snowman, it relates to our struggle as a country as we figure out, creatively, how to come together and work out our problems. At first, we fought against each other but now we have found out that we need to come together and work out our problems together, we must be creative in our problem solving.

Beauty in Difference

For my art piece, I chose to do digital art. I’m not the best at drawing so I made this on Canva and it was very fun. I really wanted to focus on how beautiful diversity is and how boring life would be if we were all the same. I wanted to showcase diversity and unity. In the center you can see all the hands are different colors and they’re all holding each other. This is how I hope one day the world will be. It represents unity and hope. I chose to include flowers in my art piece. I feel like flowers represent a lot . Flowers to me when I see them represents friendship, love and forgiveness. I decided to include these in to hopefully represent forgiveness and love. Lastly, I chose to use the words. Diversity is beautiful. I think this phrase is used a lot, and it should be. The fact that each one of us, as an individual are completely different, is such a beautiful thing, that can mean skin tone, race, gender, economic differences, disabilities and different backgrounds. This creates a world more beautiful than we even know. If we were all the same person with all the same backgrounds, there’s no way we would ever be able to solve anything.

What a good day to watch someone grow

Looking at diversity in a child's life through this course has been an enlightening journey, revealing that every child, regardless of age, brings their evolving, in-the-moment self into the classroom. They learn about what is important to their family, and begin slowly to decide for themselves how they want to reflect those values. It's a complicated journey, growing up. And I'm here for it!

I made this little logo (using Canva) to keep on my desk for my future classroom or wherever I professionally engage with children. To me, diversity in the statement, 'It's a great day to teach tiny humans,' means recognizing each person as a whole human, not just as a student. Being culturally and linguistically responsive has shown me the unique individuality of each child. Managing a classroom with diverse needs can be challenging, but my ongoing goal is to encourage children to express their entire humanity. I strive to actively acknowledge and reflect their humanity in the classroom to the best of my ability.

Rather than lessening our cultural differences, 'It's a great day to teach tiny humans' serves as a reminder for me to slow down and appreciate everyone for the unique, colorful, and vibrant cultures they bring as individuals.

We all Belong - McKenna Taylor

For my artivism, I decided to draw a few children with equal signs being a major piece of the drawing. At the top, I wrote, “We all belong!” because regardless of who we are or where we come from we all deserve a sense of belonging in the world. I drew one stick figure in a wheelchair and another one with a cane to represent that some children we may have in our classes might have disabilities and disabilities can come in many different forms that we should be aware of as educators. Some of the sticks don’t follow the “traditional” look that you might expect from them because not every child will be the same or find comfort expressing themselves in non-traditional ways. The big equal sign at the top has the colors of the rainbow because the rainbow represents inclusivity, love, and hope, which all children should feel when they enter a class.

Ableism in the Context of Autism: "Why fit in when you were born to stand out?" -Dr. Seuss

For this assignment, I chose to use an art piece that I did during my senior year of high school for an Autism Awareness Project that I started and got TONS of support for from friends as well as from acquaintances at school. Following the creation of this art piece, I also made a double batch of puzzle-piece-shaped cookies with blue icing on them and handed them out to people at school, encouraged many of my friends and acquaintances at school to wear blue in honor of Autism Awareness and to send me photos of them wearing blue, which I then posted on my Instagram account to spread the word and get more support, which worked. I also got support from a club on campus at school and they had a bunch of different things made such as bookmarks with facts about Autism on them that we handed out to students on campus. Both the idea for this project and my passion for Autism Awareness came about from my own Autism diagnosis, which, at the time of my diagnosis when I was in 4th grade, 15 years ago, was known as Asperger's Syndrome, but that term is no longer used. I have known and gone to school with and worked with many other individuals with Autism since getting my own diagnosis, which only solidified my decision to use this as my art piece for this assignment.

Teaching in a Diverse Society

The art piece that I decided to upload is actually a picture of a project that was done in the class I work in. I chose this as my art piece because I felt like this really helped the children understand diversity and what it means when we explain that we are different but the same. Going over physical features such as the eyes, lips, and nose so they could see what similarities they each had and then talking about color, race, ethnicity and culture helped go over diversity in the classroom. Looking at the mirror and then drawing themselves was an eye opener for them. It was interesting and a fun activity.
