-Sentence/Passage Level: The passage include simile. It used Will's narrative and perspective. There was imagery to help the reader picture the room. The imagery shows how the drawer is almost a safe for the gun to keep others out. The description of the drawer displays the mood of the passage.

-Whole text level: Revolves around the gun. The end displays how the middle drawer represents Shawn. When it describes the drawer as being the only out of place thing in Shawns room; this points to how the only out of place thing in Shawn's life was the gun, otherwise he was a very put together person. This section is an introduction to the gun; it opens the door to Will's journey. The drawer was supposed to keep will out; this highlights the fact that Shawn knows that he is not supposed to be doing this.

-YA Lit Themes: Discusses keeping secrets or things hidden from your family. Represents shame and also keeping things away from family to protect them. The passage can display the theme of feeling stuck.

Sentence Level: This passage is very direct; the narrator's voice is angsty in ways. The motivation behind this is to get the reader to sympathize with Will.

Whole Text: A large theme in this passage is grief. Explaining how his sadness deepens in ways the reader might not have thought. When Will says he isn't surprised about Shawn's death, it deeps a little dry. This gives us more insight into his mind.

YA Lit Themes: This passage explains themes of wanting to fit in, needing justice, losing an important figure, and self-discovery.

The first paragraph uses simile, metaphor, and parallelism. The author is talking about Dani, and how short her life was. There is also a lot of imagery painting a clear picture for the reader.

Will's frustration of how short Dani's life was is shown in the sharp connotation of the wording "snaps us shut," in the description of God closing the metaphorical wallet.

Peer pressure and social ideals are prominent obstacles for Young Adults. They can relate to Will's struggles with "the rules" and more specifically with this passage's articulation of grief and it's role in decision making. This passage parallels the discouragement felt by many YA readers today.
