         <title>colonial settlement 1600s-1700s</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>On December 20, 1606 the London company set sail to settle down in Virginia. On board they had about 105 men, 40 soldiers, 35 gentlemen, artisans, and laborers. Captain Newport was instructed to settle down where Spanish could not find where they were at. He also wanted to attack and have access to the sea. Where they settled they named it "James towne."&nbsp;<br>Colonial Settlement helped Europeans establish colonies.<br>It also helped them increase territory and enrich themselves.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The American Revolution happened because tension grew between residents from Great Britain's 13 North Colonial government. By the next summer of 1775 rebels were waging full-scale war for their independence. 1778 France entered the Revolution being on the colonist side. The British surrendered in 1781 because of French assistance to the Continental Army. The Americans ended up winning their independence.&nbsp;<br>The American revolution was the insurrection fought between 1775 and 1783. It also founded with the Declaration of Independence in 1776.</div>]]></description>

         <title>The New Nation 1783-1815</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>1776 the Continental Congress created a committee and that committee wrote articles of Confederation which loosened the alliance of the States. A disagreement came about how they dealt with the Western lands claimed by several States. When Virginia stopped claiming and gave them to the west lands the Articles of Confederation were adopted. union of sovereign states was created because of the Articles of Confederation. Each state had one vote in the Confederation Congress and they needed the votes of 9 out of 13 to pass any act of Congress.<br>The New Nation helped Americans establish their government. The New Nation also requisitioned men and money from the states.</div>]]></description>

During this period Democratic, the Whig, the American, the Free Soil, and the Republican Parties happened. Indian tribes and Mexicans were displaced when White settlers moved to the West. Territorial expansion created conflict between North and South.<br>National expansion helped create the public school system. It also helped Women get equal rights. </div>]]></description>

The South remained largely agricultural and the North had become increasingly industrial and commercial. The Northerners wanted to limit how much slavery spread while Southerners wanted expand the institution. In 1861 eleven southern states seceded from the Federal Union.&nbsp;<br>The Civil War redefined citizenship and expanded the franchise. It also changed the relationship between the federal government and state government. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The railroads to the West opened up vast areas of the region to settlement and economic development. East settlers opened went across the Mississippi to mine, farm and ranch. Settlement from the East transformed the Great Plains. American Indians seemed doomed that they were defeated by settlers and the military force of the U.S. government. Most American Indians had been confined to reservations in areas in the West that were least desirable in the 1800s.&nbsp;<br>The rise of Industrial  America increased production. Another thing it helped with was get production from rural areas to urban areas.</div>]]></description>

The progressive era made American society a better and safer place. They worked to clean up corrupt city governments, to improve working conditions in factories, and to better living conditions. This also gave women the right to vote for recall, referendum, and direct election of Senators. In 1917 the United States joined Great Britain and France in the war against autocratic Germany and Austria.&nbsp;<br>The progressive era helped by passing a food safety law. It also increased political rights for Women. </div>]]></description>

During this time it gave Adolf Hitler in Germany and military in Japan a rise.&nbsp;<br>This event helped give unemployment insurance. It also gave public housing.</div>]]></description>

Money for veterans who attend college, being able to purchase a home or farm was easier because of the GI Bill of Rights passed in 1944.&nbsp;<br>This war gave 17 million civilian new jobs.          <title>15th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution 1870</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The 15th Amendment, enacted in 1870. This fulfillment of all promises to African Americans. This meant that the African American lives were given privileges that they didn't have before. African Americans were written into the laws of former Confederate states. <em>Plessy </em>v. <em>Ferguson</em> legalized “separate but equal” meaning they had the right to do things but in different locations. "Jim Crow" gave African American's to move up to second-class citizenship.<br>The 15th Amendment help African American men vote. It also helped them go from poor to 2nd class citizenship. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>On April 28, 1970 President Richard Nixon ordered U.S. ground troops to invade Cambodia. People criticized him for abusing his power. This gave passage to the War Power of Acts in 1973. This also limited the Commander-in-Chief to the ability to declare war without congressional approval. Presidents exploited loopholes in the War Powers Resolution, raising questions about executive power.&nbsp;<br>Congress had become increasingly active in the years prior to the passage of the War Powers Act.&nbsp;Congress also had to be determined to play a larger role.<br><br></div><div><br></div>]]></description>
