Continuing until a supreme court decision in 1956, buses in Montgomery, Alabama were part of racial segregation. African Americans were forced to sit together in the back of buses while the white people got to sit in the front of the bus. If an African American was sitting at the front of the bus, they would be asked to give up their seat to a white person and move to the back of the bus. In the picture above, you can see segregation take place as the African American people are sitting in the back and the White people are sitting at the front of the bus. Racial segregation of public transportation was just one of the many forms of racial segregation in the U.S. at the time.

Rosa Parks was just one of the many African Americans who were forced to sit in the back of the bus by unjust law. However, on December 1st 1955, she decided that things needed change. On that day Rosa Parks decided to sit at the front of the bus. She was then asked to give up her sea and move to the back of the bus, she refused. This sparked a protest that lasted for a year until the supreme ruled the bus segregation unconstitutional.

Because Parks' refusal to give up her seat was illegal in Alabama, she was arrested. This arrest sparked unrest among the African American community in Montgomery. The unrest led to the historical moment of the Montgomery Bus Boycott in Alabama. The boycott was a peaceful protest where African Americans decided to walk to work. This lasted for a year when a supreme court decision made it illegal for bus companies to segregate.

The boycott started on December 5th 1955 and the plan was a simple, but effective one. The boycott consisted of African Americans simply not using the bus and walking to where they need to go everyday. The protests planned to skip the bus ride everyday until a change was made. The protest lasted for 381 days and officially ended on December 20th 1956 when the Supreme Court ruled the Segregation was unconstitutional. In the picture above, you can see a large number of African Americans are walking to where they need to be instead of using the bus.

In the picture above, you can get a better look at the amount of Africans Americans who participated in the protest. Because the protest, the bus companies lost a lot of money which is another reason why the segregation ended. The boycott was harmful to the bus companies because African Americans made up 75% of the total riders of the buses. Also, 90% of African Americans participated in the protest. On June 5th 1956, the Montgomery Improvement Association finally took legal action against the companies and it worked its way up to the Supreme court where they ruled in favor of the MIA.

In this picture, you can get a better understanding about the effectiveness of the buss boycott. You can see that only two people are present on the bus. This is because the majority of the riders decided not to take the bus to support Rosa Parks and the protest. After 381 long days of peaceful protest, the lawsuit filed against the companies worked its way up to the Supreme Court and deemed that segregation of buses was unconstitutional. The Montgomery Bus Boycott was just a step in the quest towards racial equality.
