How does one begin to talk about this I barely have words. It is a story about our relationship with the natural world and its extraordinary power to heal but also its fragility. It is a story about finding yourself, friendship and family. It is fiction but it is full of real facts about whales and little things we can do as individuals to help the natural world around us. It is poignant, it is emotional and the illustrations are beautiful. A must read for all ages.

The second in a trilogy which started with The Luminaries this book did not disappoint. It is perfect for those looking for an atmospheric adventure full of tension and heart all bundled up with a splash of mystery. The characters remain vivid and although the story meanders around the long way in places it is all important. Spoiler alert the last couple of pages made me well up with emotion in a sad but also good hopeful way. Can’t wait for book 3.

A million to one by Adiba Jaigirdar is perfect for those who love a historical heist multiple POV novel. Set on the Titanic we all know it will sink so there is that tension from the start. 4 girls with uniques skills set out to pull off stealing the Rubaiyat a jewel encrusted book (a real life book lost with the Titanic) to start new lives. A great read that evokes a real sense of place and time, with richly imagined and likeable characters, and a plot that engages with plenty twists and turns.

Leeva at last by Sara Pennypacker

What are people for? That’s what Leeva wants to find out in this is heartwarming and charming tale. The story is fun but try not to analyse it too much - it is very like Roald Dahl tales but unlike Dahl the “villains” don’t have any redeemable features. However Leeva (who is a bit of a Matilda - again don’t let it put you off) is a great character as are the people she meets in her local town. The story is about exploitation, courage, kindness and friendship.

Allergic by Megan Wagner Lloyd and Michelle Mae Nutter

Allergic is a wonderful graphic novel about a girl who wants a dog but once she goes to pick one out it transpires she is allergic to them. If you want to read a huggable story of change, friendship and coming to terms with new circumstances this is worth picking up. The illustrations like any good graphic helped to tell, augment and bring extra atmosphere to Megan’s wonderful story. I even learnt new facts about allergies. Overall a great read.

Finally getting stuck into this gem - a historical thriller set in Romania in 1989 during the revolution. So far enjoying the short chapters which are perfectly formed, each one makes you think with threads and hints pulling at you to read more. There is tension and light it is great! Copies available in the library give it a go when we return to school.

(Since finishing this one I rated it one of my best reads of 2023 as it opened my eyes to a whole chapter of history which I knew next to nothing about and in a really compelling and impactful way - to read it is to believe it.)

This book was beautifully written and is highly immersive drawing you as a reader in. It is told from different points of view and the setting in a hospital. If you like stories about families and medicine with a bit of fantasy thrown into the mix this is the perfect read.

If you enjoy fast paced, well plotted murder mysteries full of conspiracy, scandal and cover ups this is a great engaging read. Try and solve the clues it is fun.

A great award winning graphic memoir full of heart, humour, awkwardness and the cringeworthy moments of being a teenager. It tells the story of when Dan went to Europe (he’s from California) in 1989 and is full of first experiences from his first Fanta to maybe even his first girlfriend. Be prepared for characters speaking French and German to translate a bit. Dan’s vivid illustrations and storytelling makes the story come alive and takes you on the journey with him with lots of fun sightseeing!

Written like a tv script their voices jump off the page and the photos are great to browse through too. A great read!

Told in vignettes it is quite clever and you could read it all in one go or put it down and come back to it as many times as you like as the story is strong. It is a visual colourful comedic feast. It is a classic coming of age story about connecting with your family roots.

Cici’s Journal Lost and Found is a wonderful graphic tale told through sequences of illustrated journal entries and events told through picture and word sequences. It is reflective, heartwarming and heartbreaking and is all about trauma and forgotten memories, relationships and healing. The colour palette is evocative and has a halcyon days feel almost dream like. A really enjoyable hug of a book.

A beautiful verse novel, cleverly changing between the voices and interconnected experiences of Nat in the UK who has lost her mum and Sammy from Eritrea who’s dad was murdered and is risking everything and leaving all loved one to gain sanctuary. A heartbreakingly brilliant and compelling read.

It is a gem and one worth rereading many times.

The story is one of building trust, overcoming trauma, courage, friendship and the fact that all relationships are messy and there is a touch of romance at the end. You will go on a ghost tour along with the characters but be prepared for a twist that might slightly break your heart. The fact that all the ghosts were children and the tour was with children added to the atmosphere and tension in this story. A compelling quick read that is dyslexia friendly too.

Finlay is starting university and Banjo has a new foster placement and a new school for S6 and they both have insecurities but react in different ways. It deftly examines trauma, masculinity, friendship and love in all its guises. Heartbreaking and hopeful it is an immersive read and the kind of book you won’t want to put down. Warning it will stay with you always.

A great LGBTQ fantasy graphic novel! It’s set in a fantasy world where magic is essentially banned because it is contagious. Anyone who is magical or uses it is persecuted. Wynd has pointed ears and is magical so when the bandaged man returns who can sniff out magic he is no longer safe and his adopted mother tries to get him out of the city. Great world building, captivating illustrations. Something I loved was that Wynd is Gay but no one seems to care which is refreshing. Now to read vol 2!

Treacle town by Brian Conaghan

Brian is a master at lifting voice from the page and this book is a masterclass in storytelling. It doesn’t hold back any punches it is bleak but has unique Scottish humour about it. Con lives in a dead end (Treacle) town with gang violence and sectarianism. He is dealing with personal tragedy. The book starts with the funeral of his pal who was killed by another gang. He is desperate to escape and when he stumbles on the slam poetry he might just have a way out. A brilliant senior read.

An angel for May by Melvin Burgess

A short time travelling story. Set in the north of England in the present day and during WW2. Tam is dealing with his parents’ divorce and is unhappy. One day when up on the hill behind his house at a ruined farmhouse he meets a collie and then a strange beggar woman. He isn’t a fan but she keeps returning and he eventually asks her where she lives and in the showing he slips back through time with her. So begins an adventure full of joy, heart, tension and a smidgen of tragedy. Great quick read.

Our narrator Ant has questions about them all - including what counts as losing your virginity? The stark illustrations add to a multilayered story that at its heart follows a secret relationship between Ant and outwardly homophobic Charlie and the fallout of this dynamic. I liked the blacked out text throughout and its role in the narrative. Worth reading.

As with all Brian’s books there is humour, heartbreak, great characters and pure warmth all wrapped up in a compelling tale

It is about back stage crew and all those things hidden in the magical depths that the flashy actors on stage know nothing about that make productions come to life. You’ll need to suspend your disbelief for it but it is funny, mysterious with a dark and slightly spooky edge yet is about ultimately about finding your people. The graphics are bold and add depth to the story creating atmosphere, mood and express emotions well. Worth a read.

King Cheer by Molly Horton Booth, Stephanie Kate Strohm and Jamie Green

Highly readable with engaging illustrations this sports story is full of drama, insecurities, friendship, romance and explore what it means to be a good team.

Hazel Hill is gonna win this one by Maggie Horne

A fantastic read about friendship, standing up for your friends and not giving up when adults let you down! It centres around a 7th grade (S1) year group where girls are facing sexual harassment from a boy in their year but when Ella reports it she is told their is no proof and that she shouldn’t be on social media and is actually punished for it! Highly recommend to all as it tackles this topic and others in a relatable and sensitive way. By the end you will 100% want a Hazel in your life.

The plot was slow in places and felt predictable however the ending makes it worth reading! You’ll have to hang in there until the last pages to feel your blood turn cold and realise perhaps not all was as it seemed.

Lots of classic good vs evil it has punchy, funny dialogue and illustrations full of really interesting details. I loved Manny, Roscoe, Fluffy and Shifty and particularly enjoyed the hippo scene.
