"But above the gray land and the spasms of bleak dust which drift endlessly over it, you perceive, after a moment, the eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg" (23).

When Tom Buchanan invites Nick Carraway over to meet Myrtle, they go through the Valley of Ashes. Against the grey and monochrome town, the Eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg provide the colorful and hopeful nature among the people living there. Nick notices the board almost immediately while traveling by the valley, and describes it as a godly being overlooking the town. He says, "But his eyes, dimmed a little by many paintless days under sun and rain, brood on over the solemn dumping ground." It shows how long it has been there, but has provided nothing towards to town other than existing. Jocelyn Nguyen

Wilson told this to Myrtle when he confronted Myrtle for cheated on him. After Myrtle refusing to admit that she cheated on him with Tom, Wilson said this in order for her feel guilt and tell him the truth.
This was said again when after Myrtles death, during Michaelis attempt to consol Wilson. Wilson explained to Michaelis the events leading up to Myrtle's death discussing the affair between her and Tom. It was here that Michaelis revealed to Wilson that the billboard with the eyes weren't god's eye but merely an advertisement.

Although the eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg acts as a symbol for God in the Valley of Ashes, it gives a false impression of protection towards the people living in the valley. The eyes, though looking over the area, doesn't act to fix any wrongs that are done there. For example, though Myrtle and Tom have a affair with one another, the eyes turn a blind eye towards the act and doesn't help with George's misery. Later on in the book, George refers to the eyes as a god by telling Myrtle that "God" is always watching. By establishing this connection, the readers can conclude that religion wasn't taken very seriously in the 1920s, unlike partying and drinking. It also shows that God, within this story, does little to nothing to help humanity. Jocelyn Nguyen

We are first introduced to the eyes when Tom and Nick were going to the Valley of Ashes. The eyes are supposed to mirror eyes of the owl-eyed, whom we meant in the library. He is supposedly the mayor of the city, and yet when we meant him, he was drunk and barely conscious. He was also the one that crashed his car during the party. This scene represents the corruption during the 1920s: the roaring 20s.
This symbol was brought up again during Myrtle's fight with Wilson, where Wilson referred the eye's of Doctor T.J Eckleburg as god. Wilson believed that "god's eye" was looking over the Valley of Ashes. After Myrtle's death when Michaelis was trying to provide solace to Wilson. Michaelis revealed that the eye's were just an advertisement.
