Developmentally appropriate PE is inclusive. It is of high quality. Roehampton Lifelong Physical Education embraces a developmentally appropriate pedagogical approach; the skill theme approach. As such we bridge early years to curricular PE through the introduction and refinement of motor skills (fundamental through early years towards mastery by key stage 1., and progression of these into advanced and more domain-specific skills (e.g. sports skills for modified game play, core aquatic skills, wheel-based emergent skills and so on) across key stage 2.
All of our RLPE curricular modules and sessions are underpinned by this ethos and practice. Our class text (Children Moving.., Graham, et al., 2020) is actively used to provide content and pedagogical knowledge. This PCK is exemplified using the movement analysis framework; the movement wheel. It is a holistic pedagogical tool designed to assist with planning and teaching developmentally appropriate tasks, experiences; and indeed a fully thought-out scope and sequence lessons. As a PE ITE tool, it teaches students to become critical consumers of what is 'out there' and how to adapt existing resources to fit key learning intentions, the class, and the context. We adopt a curricular spiral through this approach to increase student-teacher competence and confidence.
