'Suffragettes' was a word used all around the world to describe all women who campaigned for the right to vote.
The Suffragette movement started in the 1890s and continued on until around 1910. The suffragettes strongly fought for the right to vote in many ways. In 1908 all white women in Australia were finally allowed the right to vote in every colony.

The Suffragettes originally started in America in 1848. The Suffragettes formed a little bit later in Australia, not until at least the 1880's. The suffragettes started and were based in Melbourne, as Melbourne was the most populous city in Australia at the time. Very quickly, the suffragettes gained more and more people for their cause and soon enough there was at least on major suffragette society in every colony.
The suffragettes fought extremely hard for the right to vote. Multiple protests, public meetings, campaigns were held for the fight to vote. In 1891, one very famous signature campaign, held by Vida Goldstein, gathered 30,000 women's signatures and presented them as a petition to the Victorian Parliament. In 1891, Mary Lee (another famous suffragette) presented another signature petition from 11,600 women in South Australia and the Northern Territory.
The first colony to allow the right to vote was South Australia in 1895. But the suffragette's hard-work wasn't over yet. Western AUstralia didn't allow the right to vote til 1899, New SOuth Wales and Tasmania in 1902, Queensland in 1905 and lastly, and quite ironic since the movement started here, was Victoria in 1908.

Vida Goldstein was one of the most famous Australian suffragettes and was one of the biggest leaders in the movement. From a young age, Vida decided that her life was going to be devoted to helping women and children and the less fortunate. She vowed never to get married as she believed being married and having kids would make her life-long goal impossible to achieve. But Vida's real steps in helping the lives of many other didn't start til 1891. Vida's mother was a big time suffragist and influenced it among her daughters. So, when Vida's mother told her she was collecting signatures for the a gigantic petition, Vida was more than happy to help. In less than six weeks, 30,000 signatures had been collected and what is now known as the 'Monster Petition' was made. Sadly, the petition was denied by the Government, but this was only the beginning of Vida's activist career. Vida continued working hard as a Suffragette and helped many women in their time of need. Vida even was invited to America to a International Suffrage Convention. Even after women in all colonies were allowed to vote, Vida continued her work by helping many suffragettes in England, staying active politically; as the leader of the Women's Political Association, being a regular speaking at meetings and rallies and working as the founder of the Women's Peace Army. Vida even wrote a public journal called the Women's Voter, which talked about political issues concerning women. Vida stood by her vow to help all women and child her whole life, and in 1949 she died of cancer at her home in South Yarra.
