Mr Tupaia is an islander janitor in a white dominant school, where all the teachers and janitors (from which we are shown) are white dominant. The director of 'GOMT' uses mise-en-scene to place two white teachers above Mr Tupaia. Further strengthening the white dominance aspect in the film, when Lena's teacher (suicidal child in the film of whom Mr Tupaia is helping), the teacher refuses to let Mr Tupaia speak and explain himself when he is caught in the woman's changing rooms staring at Lena. Mr Tupaia had to empty out the whole pool for the teacher to finally talk to him so he can explain Lena's situation. Finally, when the white janitor painted the girls changing room white when it was originally grey/grey-blue colour. If Mr Tupaia were white, would the teacher treat him differently and allow him to speak instead of brushing him off and ignoring him. Why not use a different coloured paint to repaint the girls changing room, such as a brighter blue? The director uses close up of the glass door in Mr Tupaia's house of the engraving of a sail. This gives the audience a better understanding of how immigrants can be affected by the glass ceiling, this is a metaphor in which there is a barrier between opportunities for different groups of people; may it be gender, race or culture.The author uses dialogue in the film where there is a clear understanding of the language barrier that many immigrants go through. this is shown when Mr Tupaia speaks to the teacher and the janitor and stutters when speaking english, he feels restricted by what he is trying to say. Tupaia is a islander while all the other people and teachers where white. Mis-en-scene was used to display the social divide between himself and the other teachers. When he is working at school he is shown alone and working by himself, he is never seen associating with any other co-workers as they seem to ignore him because to them he is just a cleaner who can’t speak english very well. At home he is shown alone on his bed with a photo that seemed to be his wife who is no longer alive, this scene shows how it impacts him mentally and the bird he has is a symbol of loneliness. The bird is in cage which could also be the director implying that Mr Tupaia is trapped and in isolation. I think that Mr Tupaia helping Lena was a sense of relief for him and made him feel as though he wasn’t alone because he was able to help someone who was also struggling mentally.

When Mr Tupaia goes into the girls changing rooms, he finds Lena, to whom he referred to as an angel when he had found her cry for help. We are shown the source of the cry for help, when Mr Tupaia finds Lena in a bathroom stall covering herself in a towel, waiting for the swimming lesson to be over that her teacher had organised. Due to the likelihood that she is getting beaten by her parent(s) and was threatened that if she was to tell anyone worse things would occur. Dudman portrayed this by using a low angle shot mixed with a close up shot of Lena's shoulder which is bruised, where she quickly covers up the bruises from Mr Tupaia. Child abuse is a common occurrence in New Zealand and almost 14,000 cases of child abuse was found from 1 April 2017 - 31 March 2018. This statistic (and previous statistics) causes New Zealand to have one of the most worst cases of child abuse in developed countries.
