The Treaty of Nanjing negotiated on unequal terms between the British and Qing Empire (China). The treaty reflected the military superiority of British forces. Its provisions included the cession of Hong Kong to Britain, the opening of several Chinese ports for trade, the establishment of extraterritorial rights for British subjects in China, and the payment of a substantial indemnity to Britain. The treaty's terms exposed China to further foreign interventions and set a precedent for subsequent unequal treaties with Western powers. The Treaty of Nanjing significantly contributed to the erosion of China's sovereignty and marked a turning point in its relations with the Western world during the 19th century.

The Taiping Rebellion was a devastating uprising against the Qing Dynasty in China led by the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. Fueled by socio-economic grievances, religious fervor, and opposition to Qing rule, the rebellion sought to establish a utopian society with radical social and economic reforms. Hong Xiuquan, the movement's charismatic leader, declared himself the "Heavenly King" and aimed to overthrow the imperial system. The rebellion, characterized by its scale and brutality, resulted in immense loss of life. Despite initial successes, internal conflicts, external pressure, and military campaigns by Qing forces, along with Western intervention on the imperial side, ultimately led to the suppression of the Taiping Rebellion and the restoration of Qing control.

The Nian Rebellion was a significant peasant uprising challenging the authority of the Qing Dynasty. The rebellion was carried out by the Nian bandits, who were largely disgruntled peasants and dispossessed military personnel. Operating mainly in the eastern and central regions of China, the Nian rebels engaged in guerrilla warfare and sought to address grievances related to oppressive taxation, corruption, and social inequality. The Nian Rebellion, while not as extensive or influential as the contemporaneous Taiping Rebellion, contributed to the overall instability of the Qing Dynasty during the mid-19th century. The conflict further strained the imperial government's resources and attention, exacerbating the challenges the Qing Dynasty faced from various internal rebellions and external pressures.

The Hundred Days' Reform referred to a brief period of ambitious and progressive reform initiatives undertaken by the young Guangxu Emperor from June 11 - September 21, 1898. Facing internal challenges and recognizing the need for modernization, Emperor Guangxu, with the support of reformist intellectuals like Kang Youwei and Liang Qichao, initiated a series of far-reaching changes. The reforms aimed to modernize China's political, educational, military, and economic systems, drawing inspiration from Western models. However, conservative forces, including Empress Dowager Cixi, opposed the reforms, viewing them as a threat to traditional power structures. The conservative backlash led to the abrupt end of the Hundred Days' Reform, with Emperor Guangxu being placed under house arrest. Although the reform itself did not achieve its objectives, it sparked intellectual discussions about China's future and the need for comprehensive reforms.

The Xinhai Revolution, also known as the 1911 Revolution, was a pivotal event that led to the overthrow of the Qing Dynasty and the establishment of the Republic of China. The revolution began on October 10, 1911 (Double Tenth Revolution), triggered by widespread discontent with the Qing government's corruption, incompetence, and inability to resist foreign aggression. Revolutionary forces initiated uprisings across the country. The pivotal moment came with the Wuchang Uprising in Hubei province, leading to the rapid spread of revolutionary fervor. As provinces declared their independence from the Qing Dynasty, Sun Yat-sen was elected as the provisional president of the Republic of China. The abdication of the last Qing emperor, Pu Yi, in 1912 marked the end of over two millennia of imperial rule in China and the beginning of the republican era.

The Boxer Rebellion was a violent anti-foreign and anti-Christian uprising that emerged in response to widespread discontent with foreign influence and economic hardship. The Boxers, officially known as the Society of Righteous and Harmonious Fists, were a secret society fueled by resentment towards foreigners, missionaries, and the perceived weakness of the Qing Dynasty. The Boxers initiated a campaign of violence against foreigners and Chinese Christians. The rebellion was quelled by an international military coalition, known as the Eight-Nation Alliance, composed of forces from countries such as the United States, Japan, Russia, and Britain. The subsequent Boxer Protocol imposed harsh penalties on China, including indemnities and foreign military occupation in parts of the country, further contributing to the weakening of the Qing Dynasty and China's tumultuous transition into the 20th century.

The Tongzhi Restoration was a brief attempt at reform during the reign of Emperor Tongzhi in the Qing Dynasty of China in the 1860s. Following the devastating Taiping Rebellion and the humiliating defeat in the Second Opium War, the Qing court recognized the urgent need for modernization to strengthen the empire. Empress Dowager Cixi, who was the de facto ruler, initiated the Tongzhi Restoration in an effort to modernize China's military, education, and administrative systems. The reforms included the establishment of modern schools, the creation of arsenals, and the adoption of Western military techniques. However, internal opposition from conservative officials and external pressures limited the success of the Tongzhi Restoration, and it eventually gave way to political instability.

Empress Dowager Cixi was a powerful and influential figure in late Qing Dynasty China, known for her significant impact on the country's political landscape. Rising to prominence in the mid-19th century, Cixi effectively became the de facto ruler behind the throne, exercising considerable control over imperial affairs. Her tenure included critical periods such as the Tongzhi Restoration and the Boxer Rebellion. While she initiated some reform efforts, such as the Self-Strengthening Movement, her reign was marked by a delicate balance between traditional Confucian values and the pressing need for modernization. Cixi's decisions, including her suppression of the Hundred Days' Reform, contributed to the decline of the Qing Dynasty which set the stage for revolutionary upheavals that led to the establishment of the Republic of China.

The Tongzhi Emperor, who ruled China from 1861 to 1875 during the Qing Dynasty, ascended to the throne at a young age and faced the challenges of governance. His reign followed the devastating Taiping Rebellion and coincided with attempts at reform known as the Tongzhi Restoration, initiated by Empress Dowager Cixi. The emperor's role during this period was largely ceremonial, as political power was wielded by Empress Dowager Cixi, who effectively controlled the imperial court. The Tongzhi Emperor's reign was marked by efforts to address internal issues and the encroachment of foreign powers, but the influence of conservative elements and the complex dynamics within the imperial court limited the success of reform initiatives. The emperor's premature death at the age of 18 marked the end of his reign.
