COLLAGE #1

In this final outcome, I cut up photocopies of my photographs and ripped them up so I could rearrange them to create a collage. I used photographs that include experimental imagery from a French church - I took lots of photos of the light shining in through the church doors, the big chandelier and religious symbols. I stuck the ripped up sections down in a way that makes the background seem very elusive, not having any order, with no proportion.
I wanted to add another layer to the collage so I used a white permanent marker to draw the worm like details coming out from behind the chandelier to add a bit of refinement and to bring the piece together.
The 'cannibal' fragments came from a sign on the street, and I juxtaposed them with the church imagery to show hypocrisy within the Catholic church because I wanted to question what it means to be a good person when the Pope is molesting children. 1 in 10 children will be sexually abused before the age of 18.
When it comes to outcasts, maybe the people who follow a brainwashing, ignorant group who worship something there is no evidence for are the real outcasts because they are so out of touch with reality yet we allow religion to have such an influence and control over us.

PHOTOMONTAGE SAMPLE

The shape in the middle of this photomontage is a part of a cobweb I found outside the college and it looked interesting when zoomed in really closely with the DSLR camera I was using as it didn't look like a cobweb anymore and had very interesting patterns and lines in in which I thought would look good used over the top of another image. Because my theme for this project has been to do with adolescence and social outcasts - I used an image of the shooters from the Columbine High School Massacre in 1999, an unforgettable shooting carried out by two boys who were victims of bullying during high school.
Accounts from various parents and school staffers describe bullying at the school as "rampant." Harris and Klebold were constantly picked on, it is noted that a "cup of fecal matter" was thrown at them. "People surrounded them in the commons and squirted ketchup packets all over them, laughing at them, calling them faggots," Brooks Brown, a friend of the shooters says. "That happened while teachers watched. They couldn't fight back. They wore the ketchup all day and went home covered with it."
The Columbine High School shooting was almost 20 years ago. And still the world is struggling with school shootings, gun violence, bullying and suicide. I want to provoke thought within people and make them think about why these things still happen and if we really have learnt from the past. Why did the teachers stand and watch? Why do kids think its okay to treat people who are different so bad?
Those who don't learn from the past are condemned to repeat it.

I created this sample, which was just a preliminary experiment before I would start to create my final outcomes. I decided on using a photograph of the crime scene photograph from the Columbine High School shooting of the dead bodies of Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. Then in the centre of the photo I put the cobweb detail in, which doesn't have any strong significance but I think its still good as quite an ambiguous piece of work - to provoke thought.
After sticking everything down, I was still unhappy with the composition of the photomontage so I decided to scan it into photoshop and invert the colours to make it a less recognisable image - taking the viewer longer to realise the content of the image.

PHOTOSHOP EXPERIMENT #2 - Turning up the contrast to make the darker parts darker, making the image a bit clearer and adds more of a haunting look to it.

I decided to combine the work from photography with my graphics work. For graphics, I have been creating a zine with artworks in it, I found that some of my photography collages would look good as part of the zine.

COLLAGE #2

This collage is an ironic sweets packet with the photos from the church put in like they were part of the design of the packet. For example, I used the photo of Jesus on the cross as the main motif on the sweets packet, instead of a character or an image of the sweets. I was inspired by Martin Parr's work and the way he sometimes gives food a darker side. I also found that the European supermarkets I visited had a lot of sweet packets that would be quite dark. For example, sometimes the packaging would be racist because its so out of date, or the ingredients would be very odd and meaty.
I found a sweet packet on the floor and scanned it in to photocopy it so I could use it to cut up and rearrange elements of it into the collage. I think this was a good idea and was definitely inspired by collage artists like Hannah Hoch who would use a technique called the 'cut-up'. Which is where you deconstruct something that you know and turn it into something that pushes boundaries and is though provoking.
I also used green paint to make the edges less clear and I used a blade to slice up the paper to give more layers and texture.
I like how you can still see the interior of the church near the bottom, and the way the light shines through the entrance of the church.
