Steps To Solve

Identify the missing addend, use color pencils or crayons to underline the missing number
Create your number bond
Fill in your number bond, alwasy remember that the number after the equal sign goes on the top of the number bond
Draw your circles to solve for the missing addend
Place your missing number inside your number bond.

Students will initiate the number talk by sharing the spot of the missing addend. Then they will share the next step of the process which is drawing out the number bond. Students will interact with one another and place each number in its correct bond. Once the numbers are correctly placed, students will draw out 5 circles since that is a number given to them, students will then use their addition knowledge to add up to get to the number 8. Student can utilize a different crayon to add on to get to 8. Once they are finished they now know that the missing addend is 3 and that 5 + 3 =8.

Students can get to the solution they need through number bonds and drawing out shapes, but they can also use a different strategy.

1st Strategy: Work backwards and use subtraction to solve

Ex: 5+ ___=8

Students can draw out 8 circles and take away 5 to solve for their missing addend

2nd Strategy: Use your number knowledge from the previous example. If 6 + 3=9, then 5+ 3=8

After our number talk is complete, students will receive a worksheet with three equations of missing addends. They will have 15 minutes to complete and turn it in. Teacher will stamp after completion.
