  • Claude Monet was a French painter born on November 14, 1840 in Paris, France. He founded the French impressionist style of painting. 
  • His mom died when he was 15, and his dad was a successful grocer
  •  During his free time, he drew caricatures for 20 francs 
  • He went to College du Havre, and was taught by a former student of artist Jacques-Louis David
  • He was inspired by Edouard Manet to start the age of Impressionism 
  • His works attracted other artists, including Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Edouard Manet
  • He died on December 5, 1926 in Giverny, France

  • Van Gogh was a Dutch impressionist artist born on March 13, 1853, in Zundert, Netherlands. He is is one of the most famous and recognizable painters in history
  • He had a brother with the same name as him, named Vincent Van Gogh. 
  • He was supposed to be what his dad was, a pastor which is an ordained, or voted for, leader of a Christian congregation
  • He was taught by artist Anton Mauve
  • He didn’t start painting until he was 27, unlike most famous painters.
  •   He enjoyed painting himself as he didn't have enough money to paint models.
  • His death may, or may not, have been a suicide
  • Van Gogh died on July 29, 1890 in Auvers-sur-Oise, France under unknown circumstances. He was thought to have committed suicide by shooting himself in the chest. A recent theory suggests he might have been shot by a local teenager, also.

  • Grant Wood was an American artist born on February 13, 1891, in Animosa, Iowa. He is famous for painting pictures of the rural American Midwest particularly famous for the painting American Gothic. He was one of the top if not the top American artist of the 20th century.
  • At a young age, he had an interest in impressionism. Later, he abandoned impressionism and went to the more rural Midwest realistic art style.
  • He also served in World War I for 18 months.
  •  Wood was trained as a craftsman and designer as well as a painter.
  • He went to School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
  • He got in deep tax evasion which lead him in a huge debt.
  • Fun fact: Wood's sister and local dentist posed for American Gothic.
  • He died because of pancreatic cancer on February 12, 1942, in Iowa City, Iowa.

  • Edvard Munch was a Norwegian artist born in 1863, in Adalsbruk, Norway. He is famous for his free-flowing style.
  • The most famous picture he made was The Scream.
  • Munch was born to a middle class family. His mother died died when he was 5. His eldest sister died when he was 14. His dad and other sister died while he was a young adult. These emotions were thought to affect his paintings.
  • In 1908, he suffered from delusions and was put in a mental hospital.
  • Munch died of pneumonia on January 23, 1944, in Oslo, Norway.

  • Edouard Manet was a French artist born on January 23, 1832 in Paris, France. He was famous for his modern art. He paints with loose brush strokes and impressionism style
  • He came from a pretty wealthy family. His parents wanted him to go toward a career in law but his uncle encouraged him to be a painter.
  • He first started to really get interested in art in  1853 to 1856. In those four years, he visited Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands in which he saw a lot of different art styles, and became interested in painting. 
  • Manet's paintings were colorful which was not popular at the time.
  • He drew his paintings out of emotion and drew many of his family. The paintings of his family were not as popular, though.
  • He became friends with Monet and Renoir as they all painted during the Impressionism age.
  • He died of lung cancer on April 30, 1926, in Paris.

  • Pierre-Auguste Renoir was a French artist born on February 25, 1841, in Limoges, France. He was a leading painter of the impressionist style.
  • He started out as an apprentice to a table-wear designer. Afterwords he started painting art of his own but was struggling until the age of 30.
  • After the Impressionism movement , he started getting more famous. 
  • By 1910, he couldn't walk or move his hand, but he still painted. He attached the brush to his hands and moved it.
  • Renoir died of pneumonia on December 3, 1919 at age 78, in Cagnes-sur-Mer, France.
