It’s easier to adjust our explanations than to admit we contradicted ourselves.

Have you ever found yourself going against your own beliefs, only to justify it later with reasons that made it seem acceptable? This is what exactly happened in Anna’s situation—she values work-life balance yet chooses to work overtime to aim for promotion. Does this make her a bad person, or a coworker striving to fulfill her duties in hopes of succeeding later on?

Anna's choice strongly underscores the universal human tendency to rationalize behavior when it contradicts with personal values, a core idea highlighted in the theory about Self-Justification.

According to Stoics, Self-justification is not just about making excuses, but a decision that should resonate with a deeper sense of purpose and coherence in life.

In Anna’s case, her choice to work overtime despite valuing work balance reflects this struggle—she seeks to justify her actions in a way that maintains order and meaning within her circumstances. From Anna’s perspective, it is understandable that she chooses to work overtime this once, given the pressing project deadline and her aspiration for promotion. This act becomes her way of demonstrating her full potential in the company. However, this behavior contradicts her personal belief in maintaining balance, creating an internal conflict.

This situation reflects how we often need to weigh and balance different aspects of life. In Anna’s case, she may be prioritizing her career temporarily so she can provide more for her family in the future. Her decision to work overtime does not necessarily mean it will become a permanent habit; rather, it may occur only when the company’s demands require it.

According to Brenda Callisan (2023), the way we value and perceive ourselves strongly shapes our decisions. When something threatens this self-image, we often resort to self-justification as a protective response.

Despite her efforts to balance work and family, there are moments when one priority takes dominance. This does not mean that other priorities are neglected. it simply shows that certain situations require shifting focus. For Anna, while working overtime conflicts with her belief in work-life balance, she justifies it as a necessary step to secure her professional reputation and future success.

References:

Calisaan, B.
