Students have had a chance to get comfortable in a classroom again! The first day, the kids wouldn't even talk to each other; but the freedom to just play games with them and find ways to really enjoy our time got them used to speaking and garnering some attention from their peers. I was able to focus in and see which students were motivated to participate by competition, possibility of reward, and which were more motivated by affirmation and accolades.

Students have really enjoyed the variety of activities! I wasn't sure how Jr. High students would respond to a read aloud but they started to remind me when the time got close, and when presented with the option to skip it in favor of continuing a game, they chose the story. They like to have some friendly competition; and while they don't love the reading practice for themselves, they do enjoy discussing what they've read, or researched on their own. They really liked sharing their discoveries that felt like their own because not everyone had gotten the same information and most of us, including myself, didn't know the information before.

I think students having an opportunity to associate fun and enjoyment with coming to school is awesome and might be the exact thing some of these kids have needed to feel successful. Every one of the kids from Summer Bridge knows of at least 2 or 3 adults on campus that are there for them and are 100% safe to talk to and have fun with. They don't just know of us, they know us more personally and are comfortable interacting with us! I think it's really set them up for success!

Our kids had a blast this summer. They anxiously came to school, but in turn have grown to love coming day in and out. The ability to meet and have fun with peers and teachers alike has given these students the opportunity to take risks, interact with one another, and feel welcomed at Potter. I feel our students have established a great beginning to their 7/8 grade year.

Here is a video of my classroom on the last day of school. I loved the space theme! I did a 20 minute solar system lesson a day, followed with an art lesson to make science lessons fun and engaging. By the last day our class was filled with space decor. These are only half!

Thank you to all the teachers and staff that collaborated with me. I hope you all enjoy the rest of your summer.
