Football Tournament

A tournament is a short event that generally lasts over the course of a weekend or even a few weeks at an elite level, for example the football world cup lasts around 4 weeks. A knockout tournament is the most common tournament where two teams will progress to the final to see who's the better team. A good example of a tournament is the Football World Cup. It's held every 4 years and 32 teams who have gone through a qualifying stage in their continent. All the European teams will play in qualifiers against each other, all the North, central and Caribbean teams will play each other, the south American teams and also the Asia, African and Oceania teams play qualifiers. The qualified will take part in the group stages and who ever comes top 2 in each group of 4 will progress to the knockout rounds. Each team is then drawn against an opponent in the last 16 to see who will qualify into the quarter finals and so on. Below I have an image of the world cup that the lucky players get to lift if they're fortunate enough to win the world cup. Also a video clip of all the great moments in the 2014 world cup. The purpose of football tournaments are similar to the Champions League. It's there for the entertainment of supporters but also it's for teams/individual development. It improves them because if they play well they could get a big transfer and it's also there because players get to represent their country in the biggest tournament in the world.

A competition is the most common type of event that happens in sport, especially in football. The event is composed of games that take place over the course of the season. Prime examples of this type of event is the UEFA Champions League, the FA Cup and the Carabao cup. These are all club competitions that teams enter and they're more games that are played during the season and is a chance for teams to win more silver wear. The most popular competition is the champions league. It's where 32 of the top teams in Europe from all the leagues play in a group stage consisting of 4 teams from each group play each other and the top 2 from each group move on to the last 16. The competition then goes through a knockout stage when in the end 2 teams are left and play in the final to become the best team in Europe. Below I have two images, the first is the opening image or a screen shot of a clip that viewers on TV see when the champions league begins. Below that again is a picture of Zinedine Zidane with his second Champions League trophy as a manager, he also won it once as a player with Real Madrid also. Each year the quality improves physically, socially it becomes more popular on the television because the sport keeps on increasing in popularity.

Training Camps

Training camps are very popular in America and can last from up to 5 days up to a few weeks. These events are aimed more towards professional athletes who will be training up for a big tournament coming up in the summer, for example like the football or rugby world cup. They're designed to suit the athletes needs and in the case of training before a major competition it would be to gain fitness cause perhaps the teams may have to play in a hot humid country or a cold country and would need to adjust their bodies to those hot or cold climates. Other good examples are individual athletes would also go on training camps before a major competition like the Olympics to get themselves prepared before competition. For example a 5000m or 1000m track runner would to somewhere like Kenya or Ethiopia to train because of the high altitude of the country. Mo Farah is a good example of an individual athlete who trains in Ethiopia to prepare himself for the Olympics or world championships. Kenya is another place where high altitude training camps are held. Because of these training camps it's helped Mo Farah become Olympic and world champion multiple times in the 5000m and 10000m track run. Below is a picture of Mo Farah training in Ethiopia in one of his training camps and below the image is a video of British endurance athletes in a training camp in Kenya training for their competition. The purpose of training camps are to improve the quality of the athletes performance therefore you could say they're for educational purposes as they get taught on how to improve themselves. They're also for development as they improve athletes physically, socially and on personal levels if they put the effort in.
