  • sediment is transported by wind, water, ice, and eventually deposited

  • deposited sediment forms in layers and eventually gets compacted into solid rock.

  • rock layers vary in grain size and composition. grains can be old rock (sediments) or organic material such a shells.

    • chemical rocks are formed when water evaporates and leaves behind element solids.
