2020 has been an tumultuous year for all of us. My team usually is staffed with 6 great Financial Support Counselors. We had two staff members retire in the Spring semester, then COVID hit (and the transition to remote work), the announcement of Nebraska Promise, and assisting students through hard times became the priority. As the Associate Director of Support & Outreach, I would not be able to do my job without each one of my Counselors. Arnisha Collins, Senior Financial Support Counselor, collaborated with me to provide excellent leadership capability and staff training for 3 new staff members while dealing with increased customer service volume. My staff are often the voice of the University and help us onboard and retain students as the experts on financial support. I can't thank my staff enough (Arnisha Collins, Andrew Landrum, Delaney Vaccaro, Rob Leigh, Patty Saavedra Lazos, and Stephanie Parada) - they day in and day out consistently make differences in our student's lives by guiding our students and families along the financial path to obtain access to UNO.

I am grateful for the very human compassion so many have shown, particularly in these times that ask us to exist outside the box. This is not a comprehensive list, but those who immediately come to mind are (in alpha order): Marcia Adler, Jonathan Benjamin Alvarado, Katie Bishop, Kirsten Case Fuller, Arnisha Collins, Sheri Croghan, Trent Frederickson, Brenda Frye, Chris Lode, Tammi Owens, Dustin Pendley, Cathy Pettid, Dan Shipp, Harnoor Singh, Jeffrey Southall, Shannon Teamer and my Project Achieve colleagues Pat Killeen-Brown, Samantha Roberts and Lauren Wyler. All have gone out of their way to change student lives for the better, and have taken this charge very seriously. I am grateful for the model they provide. Oh, and given the difficulty I had in getting this posted, I should also thank everyone who helps us maneuver through the minefield of technology! ; )

Aaughhh! How could I forget the amazing work that Aaron Krueger is doing?????

Connie Sorensen-Birk

Even though I've had to make introductions virtually, I have still felt welcomed and appreciated during my first few weeks with the Student Success team. I'm grateful to have joined such an amazing cause and I am very much looking forward to in-person meetings soon!
